Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Here is Missouri we are waiting for a big snow storm starting tomorrow...expecting to get 16-20 inches!! I'm crazy I know, but I'm excited about it. What are some things that you all do with your children while you are cooped in the house for awhile. I'm sure we'll do some baking...any other good ideas??

Well, we're preparing for the southern tip of that storm. We're supposed to get A LOT of ice. We're making sure we have gas for the generator
I'm interested in hearing what others are doing, too.

God bless,
Christine

oh it's such a great time for reading aloud.. the storm raging outside.. and you're all cozy and warm, cuddled together sharing a book ok that's the rose colored glasses version but we're all inside warm and they do listen to a read aloud even if they snip at each other some and play with things while they listen..

how likely are you to lose power? do you have a heat source that isn't dependant on the power?

We have a fireplace...but I've mentioned before to my husband it would be nice to have a generator...of course I don't think seriously about it until weather like this happens.    We haven't had snow like this forever..so it's a big deal around here. I'm praying we will continue to have power and that my husband will just close his restaurant so he doesn't have to go into work.

well i'd make sure to have the wood you might need handy and covered rather than buried far out in the yard or something

Even with power it would be fun to use.. and you might try some tinfoil cooking in the fireplace.. like slicing up some apples, adding cinnamon and sugar and folding them into a foil pocket and putting them in the fireplace near the coals to cook.. yummy desert. or roasting marshmellows or hot dogs etc. just for fun.

puzzles are a nice thing for slow days in a storm (if you don't have to worry about toddlers hijacking pieces )

The kids are out sledding in it right now! When they come in they LOVE a cup of steaming hot milk (I add a touch of sugar and vanilla) and some freshly popped popcorn--great for warming little hands and bellies! In fact, I'm off to pop some corn right now as I have a feeling they'll be in soon!

I love snowstorms. We take out our snow themed books, read, puzzles, old movies, baking, needlecrafts... Years ago for one of my first blizzards I taught all my brothers and sisters how to cross-stitch.

We're just being grazed by this storm...looks like a little ice and mostly rain. I'm bummed.

We are expecting a big one here too. It looks like we will be in the next two days at least. Greta's birthday is tomorrow (2) so will will be having a toddler girl themed day with twirly skirts, dancing, purple play-doh, doll baby dressing... And for dessert, cake and snow ice cream!

We are getting some snow right now, but not expecting a large amount of acculuation. So we aren't getting dumped on like the midwesterners, but we are dipping down in temp. Our high tomorrow is predicted to be -3. So it's a good day to stay bundled up inside. I'm thinking hot drink, popcorn and a movie (under fuzzy blankets ).

So now I'm getting excited to stay in and just stay warm

Board games, science experiments, play doh, paints, puzzles, and videos. It's sounding like fun. How I love to make the best of things. Earlier today I was bummed to miss out on snow because the kids love to go out and play in it. Now, the indoor time with the ice outside is looking promising. Missy, thanks for starting this thread and thanks for all the great suggestions and inspiration!

God bless,
Christine

We're expecting snow in the 10-15 inches range as well, which is really strange for our area, particularly since we've already had 16-18ish inches this year.

We're planning snow ice cream and the usual hot chocolate and tea. I'd love to spend the afternoon painting with the boys if it truly does turn out to be bad enough that my music students don't show tomorrow... and some extra reading time- maybe a movie? So many choices! I'm sure the boys will need to do jumping jacks at some point to get some energy out. :D

Well I don't have any plans for the snow but I'm excited that it's coming!!! The kids will probably just want to go out and play in it. My dh will stop on his way home today and buy things like glow sticks and bottled water because we usually lose power. We'll fill our bathtubs with water too since we can't flush when there's no power. (Dumping a bucket of water into the toilet will cause it to flush - hence the tubs being filled - it's for "flush water"). The kids love it when this happens. We all camp out in the living room with the fire place and use the glow sticks as night lights.
(I love it too!)
Um, editing to add, it's not the flushing part that we all love!    It's the whole snowed-in, camping in the living room thing. The way I worded it above makes it seem like we all enjoy flushing our toilets with buckets of water!

Glow sticks are a great idea!! Wish I would have thought of that...and thanks for the reminder about filling the bathtub. I think it's just starting to lightly come down here. Have fun everyone!

We went to Michael's yesterday and bought some yarn. My children and I are all beginners, but we're planning on perhaps watching some online tutorials and doing some knitting and crocheting during the snowfall.

You all are so much fun! I am being completely utilitarian about getting ready for this storm. Maybe I'll assign my daughter the job of planning fun... she's better at than I.

I love that this storm is arriving for Candlemas Day! We just stocked up on candles this past weekend (we hoped to have them blessed at Mass, but it looks like we won't be making the hourlong drive in a blizzard!). Dh is picking up a Click 'n Pull order from Sam's (our monthly run, but the timing is perfect). Thanks to Becky's post I think I'll go inflate our portable mattress for camping in our bedroom tonight! We don't have alternative heat, so it's much warmer to huddle in one room if we're without heat. If we lose power we'll be playing board games or reading aloud; if not, we'll be watching movies from the library! Stay warm, health and safe everyone in the snowbelt!

Please keep all emergency personnel in your prayers during this storm.

My dad is a Fire Chief in WI and had said that his station is bracing for the worst.

What many people don't realize is that storms like this often produce a lot of house fires. When power goes out, people use space heaters, etc...resulting in terrible house fires.

My dad does not expect to be home for 2-3 days and is sleeping at the station with his crew...

Please keep all fire and emergency personnel in your prayers as they will be out and very busy the next few days.

Thank you!!
