Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone painted icons on wood panels? What brand of paint did you use?

I am teaching a class and plan to use acrylics instead of egg tempera (I love my high schoolers but can't see us mixing all these colors every week...with egg yolks...in my house...).

All advice welcome!

Nancy, I haven't done icons, but have you looked at gouache instead of acrylic. When I googled comparing the two, I found quite a few discussions.

I was looking at acrylics because Peter Pearson (who is a Catholic priest and icon writer) recommends them in his book A Brush With God.

We've not painted icons on wood, but we've done it on artist paper. And I've painted other things on wood. I've used expensive paints (Liquitex, Grumbacher, etc tube paints) and cheaper craft paints (Apple Barrel, Americana, FolkArt). Most of the craft grade paints are good enough for a school project. I would just prime the wood first with spray primer or a layer of white/off-white paint. (This might not even be necessary if the wood isn't very porous and you don't have unusually thin paint.) The trickiest part for me has been finding a good gold paint. Some brands "clump" or have grainy gold pieces that won't mix in with the medium. The brand I have now is DecoArt. It is smooth and has good coverage. (I've never used gold leaf so I have no advice there if that's what you're using.)
