Anyone here living with this or have someone in your family with it?
I am making an appointment due to suspected gluten intolerance hopefully for the beginning of Feb. What all does it entail?

Both of my kids have had bloodwork to test for celiac and my son has had scratch tests to test for wheat allergy.
The onyl true test for celiac is a biopsy. The bloodwork can be unreliable and there are a fair number of false negatives. My daughter's IgA came back extremely low (so she is considered IgA deficient) and so she may need to get an endoscopy and a biopsy sometime in the future (she is dealing with a whole host of GI issues so they haven't gotten that far yet)
So my guess is they will start with bloodwork and see what that shows if anything and the decide what to do from there. It is also worth being tested for wheat allergy which is DIFFERENT than celiac. It would involve the simple food allergy scratch test and/or RAST blood test for wheat.

Thank you. I have several of the symptoms that make me suspect a gluten issue so I will be calling on Monday for an appointment.

A good friend has recently learned she has celiac. One thing her dr. told her is that people of Finnish decent (which she is) have a high likelihood of celiac.
God bless,

I'm currently reading The Gluten Connection and find it very interesting. I have at least one, maybe 3 ds's that have gluten issues. One thing the author of this book says is that a biopsy will show Celiac, but not always gluten sensitivity.
We decided to first try eliminating gluten from this ds's diet and in just a few days his symptoms have decreased. That might be a good way to start.

Thanks Becky. I have been trying to cut out gluten products or at least cut them down significantly

yeah and I've heard that the allergy tests while helpful.. won't show an intolerance/sensitivity if it's not a true allergy.. it could still be the same thing causing problems without being a true allergy apparently.
A friend recommends these sites pecanbread.com and breaking the vicious cycle

Wow, Becky! Glad to hear your son is doing well.
I tend to have relatively minor health issues that go away when I am GF and come back when I slack off on that. Actually, it's one of those things that, when the problems go away, I can't believe how much better/happier I feel - so even though I pass it off as not a big deal when I eat gluten, I don't think I"d notice the difference so much unless I really do feel pretty on it. Two or three times I had bloodwork that didn't look like I should be worked up for celiac, but once I had a biopsy (during a routine colonoscopy - sorry if tmi) that was unclear. The report said "possible early celiac" - whatever that means. My rast test for wheat allergy also doesn't look so good.
I think there is A LOT of wheat allergy/gluten sensitivity out there that goes unrecognized because people just feel a little *off* and not sick enough that they go to the doctor.
Just ordered a *like new* copy of The Gluten Connection from Amazon (great deal - hardback for 11 cents plus s&h - I can't afford not to learn more ).
Peace,
Nancy

Were you able to get an appointment? We were recently discussing gluten intolerance with Becky, it is far more prevalent than acknowledged.

I just wanted to say I was surprised at how quickly my ds's problems began to clear up with the removal of gluten. That could be because he's only 3 and the damage isn't as serious as someone whose had problems for years and years. But really, in just 24 hours his appetite returned and in less than a week he's starting to gain weight.
I'm really thankful for the advice and encouragement I received at this thread. I guess I needed the little push to do what I needed to do. It's just hard with a little person because I had a hard time communicating to me when he wasn't feeling well.
Hope you get some answers Jillian!

I have found this book very useful found online or amazon. GAPS can help people with all sorts of digestive problems, autoimmune conditions and more. I learnt how the digestive system is so linked to other health problems. Short you tube videos can be found like this one or this one. This is Dr Natasha Campbell McBride's website and another. There is a lot about healing various mental or physical illnesses but it all starts with healing the gut. Her programme/diet is temporary and designed to heal the gut and therefore not needing to be on lifelong diet eg gluten free. There's lots on this topic in google.

This is pretty much my experience as well. I've never had any formal testing procedures done, or bloodwork for that mattter. But it doesn't take any of that (for me) to know that I certainly have gluten sensitivities. I haven't any idea of whether or not I have a true allergy to it, and I know that I'm not intolerant, but sensitive? Yes. I am better off staying away from it altogether.

Chris and Nancy, that's similar to what is going on for me. I would like to get some answers about it though to just be able to say for certain ya know? It would finally put to rest that niggling feeling I have that something is wrong with me.
