Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I really identified with this article link I received this morning and thought I might not be alone in having wondered and pondered these very things.

Thanks for the link, Martha. I enjoyed the article (and I have often thought about how "adult" the movie actors looked back then!)

Very interesting and gentle on Gen Xers which I appreciate.
I love this line:

"Being kittenish, or obscene, or adorably perplexed—we can do that. But gathering the gravity and confidence that signals full maturity is beyond our capabilities. It’s not youth that passed us by, but adulthood."

I'm afraid that I got through a security checkpoint at a museum just the other day by being something between kittenish and adorably perplexed (maybe friendly and temporarily illiterate would be a description?). My friend, who is almost 10 years younger but has the maturity and confidence that comes with being a doctor, went through the same checkpoint. I got into the museum with everything I brought. She made the guard mad and had to check her baby carrier and diaper bag.

The problem is <sigh> that how we've been taught to behave works.
