Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

by holding a magnet near it (so now it's a science lesson). So I googled, and found this -- just in case any of you runs into this problem, or want to experiment with an old monitor, or simply need to know that a toddler should never be allowed to hold a magnet near any electronic stuff...

How to Fix Your Magnet-Ruined Monitor!

Meanwhile, I'm comforting her because she feels really guilty

I'm sorry, Stef. That's an expensive science lesson.
A couple of years ago, the same thing happened to our television. It adjusted itself after a few days.

Were you able to fix it or improve the screen at all?

Wow Stef! Yikes! I just never let them play with magnets anywhere near the CPU -- didn't know it would ruin a monitor too!

But isn't it amazing that you could find the answer on the WWW? It never ceases to amaze me what is out there -- why, you could homeschool with just an internet hook-up (altho cuddle time on the couch would be a bit painful )

it kinda fixed itself after about half an hour. the upper 1/4 of the monitor and an inch or so on the right looks "shadowy", like if you were working in a room with a curtain blocking the light.

LOL, i wasn't in the room when it happened. my 7-yo was doing his spanish, the 9-yo was helping him and the 4-yo was "hanging around", holding the magnet. suddenly she holds it near the monitor (no idea why) and then they were panicking and calling me. (sigh) the things you find out homeschooling. i'm just glad it's not permanently ruined. a good monitor these days is what, $300 or $400? yikes indeed.

so on our list of books to borrow from the library are magnets, magnets and magnets. might as well make the most out of this

This happened to one of our old monitors also, back when my now 7 yr old was a toddler. Ours never adjusted itself and the whole left half of the screen was always messed up after that. I had no idea it would do that either. I figure he just wanted to see if the magnet would stick -- he had been testing things all over the house to see if it would...I am pretty sure that is what happened. Wish I had known about the fix though! I'm saving it to show dh when he gets home!
