Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What are your thoughts on this series? I got several of these books years ago... before I started looking into Charlotte Mason. When I read them now I'm not sure if they would be considered twaddle (or maybe they are "talking down"?); in fact I have a lot of trouble distinguishing what would be considered twaddle...
Advice?

Edit: I didn't cry over these... I meant years not tears

I am not familiar with these particular books, but I think I have an idea what they are like, having seen similar books.
I'd suggest, as an alternative, reading stories of famous people who personify the virtue you seek to encourage. Stories of the saints are good, but also books such as Everyday Graces by Karen Santorum, or The Childrens Book of Virtues, or Book of Heroes both edited by William Bennett. There are many more, but these come to mind as excellent examples.
By using books such as these, you have an opportunity to discuss particular virtues, while reading quality literature about great lives.

(I wrote this reply before realizing that you said you had read them...sorry for going into such detail)

I picked a ton of these up at Goodwill one day when my oldest was little. The kids liked them, I did not! They rubbed me the wrong way. It's been a long time since I've "re-goodwilled" them, but I think mostly it was because they were giving my children bad ideas! Like in one about disobeying, it shows the little girl disobeying in many different ways to go on and say why she shouldn't. But my kids were missing the point of the story and just laughing about the girl or the mad mom.

They aren't really stories either, if I remember correctly, but more like lectures. "Don't whine and pout when your mother tells you to make your bed. She wants what's best for you!" and so on.

They may be great for certain kids, but it just didn't fly here.

Thanks Theresa and Amy!

I will be getting rid of these. I don't doubt that the author had good intentions, and she's had great success with them; they just seemed to be more like lectures, like you said Amy.

Theresa, thanks for the suggestions! We already have Bennett's Children's Book of Virtues. I'll look for Book of Heroes and Everyday Graces as well.
