MUS Algebra is not working for my freshman (or me)! The main problem is not understanding the way he explains a particular topic. What have others used?

We used Jacob's Algebra, but that might get pricey if you have to buy the teacher's manual or solutions guide. (I didn't.)
We have also used Teaching Textbooks for Geometry and really liked the way they explained. I think that their algebra is very good too.

I will look into those. Thank you Janette and Aagot! Has anyone used Saxon Algebra? Any particular likes or dislikes?

Just wanted to add another thumbs-up for Teaching Textbooks. My oldest is almost finished with Algebra and has done well with it. I like that it can be done mostly independently and also that it is presented in a way that feels very familiar to me. Similar to my own math experiences, I suppose, which were advanced and mostly good (Calculus not so much) in high school.
When we were at Mary M's conference last summer, the TT rep there said that the natural order for math would be Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and beyond, but that Geometry has been placed before Algebra II in most high school programs for SAT test taking purposes only. I found that very interesting.

Life of Fred is a big hit here.
My 14 yr. old asked me last week to order their geometry because she really wasn't meshing well with Jacob's. She LOVES the Life of Fred math books.
Rainbow Resource Center has a lengthy review of Life of Fred Beginning Algebra.
