Asking help from those of you who already know this stuff since I can't concentrate well on this kind of research right now. Who knows, maybe someone actually enjoys giving this kind of advice? I'm looking for as inexpensive as possible but effective stuff that doesn't have phthalates or parabens (I have no idea whether skin care products usually would) and is overall as natural as possible. I don't even care if it's "rub an orange peel on your face every morning," just tell me what you've seen work!
I want to make my face look better (younger, fresher) now and especially preserve it for the future. I have some spots that are dry enough to be flaking (ugh), like forehead right above/between eyebrows, and although they're not really a problem, I'm also not totally resistant to getting pimples -- mostly on and around the chin. Overall I'd say I have more dry than oily skin, especially right now. I could stand to drink a little more water and am trying to increase that amount, but I think it's more that our house is dry than that I'm dehydrated.
If there's something that helps with existing lines, that'd be nice, but I can only invest so much. Some times more than others, you can sort of see a shadow of lines next to my mouth, kind of long vertical ones that don't look very cheery. I am not sure that's not just the particular construction of my face having become emphasized by too many of the wrong expressions over the years -- or maybe by simply using my face at all and getting older without having genes for great skin elasticity? (I'm 32.)
Also, if it matters, I'm pale. Not the palest of pale, but maybe close. My skin seems to be devoid of yellowish tones. I am not really interested in foundation type products, but just thought I'd throw it in if that matters to anything for people who have a clue about these products.

I use oil of olay beauty cream.. it's just a moisturizer type product.. I use it after a shower or washing my face.. climate here is very dry and my skin gets very itchy and tight without something and my face likes this.. whether it's natural or not and there's tons of sunscreens and such that I can not use on my face so just the fact that I can use it..
Anyway.. right after washing so that my skin is still moist and adding the lotion helps keeps some of that moisture in.
I also only wash my face with plain water.. no soaps of any type.. when I use makeup it's something that can be washed off with plain warm water.
You might check into pure aloe or some of the good oils like almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil.. you can put an oil on while your face is still wet.. just a tiny bit. I have used aloe when I lived in AZ after every shower as a body cream.. lotions were too heavy down there in the heat.. and that worked nicely.
good nutrition is important.. I see you noted keeping hydrated overall too.. but also things like essential fatty acids.. those help your body produce the proper amounts of natural oils for your skin (and hair!)

A month or so ago, I had the first and only professional facial of my life (a gift). The aethestician (sp?) recommended using a gentle scrub with enzymes to help removed the flaky old skin. I wasn't about to buy the products she was using, so I explored Target when I got home.
I have been using Alba facial scrub with pineapple enzymes 2-3 times a week. Alba also makes a pineapple enzyme facial cleaner. They are very, very gentle. I use Alba jasmine and vitamin e cream for moisture, with a little drop of jojoba oil around my eyes and on really dry spots at night.
I don't use sunscreen unless I am going to be out in full sun for a long time, like at the beach or park with no shade. I do wear a hat when it's sunny. Sunscreen really irritates my skin...makes me look like I have roseacea.
As far as makeup, I have been using BareEsentuals Bare Minerals for years. I love it--quick, easy, natural-looking. It doesn't pool or cake in little lines or pores like liquid makesups can.
That's what works for me, at the moment!

Is there a trick foe the Bare Essentials? I can't get it to not settle in the 'fine lines', making them look bigger...and my skin look drier :(

I would really recommend reading the book The Skin Type Solution by Leslie Baumann. She has an extensive questionnaire to determine your skin type and then has thorough explanations (and specific product recommendations) for each one. I found it to be very helpful. She does recommend commercial products, which might not be what you're looking for, but also some all-natural products, as well as more general tips for healthy skin.

Thanks for the book suggestion, Katherine! Just put it on hold at the library. I have never, ever been able to figure out what are the best products for my skin.
Peace,
Nancy

Well, a good moisturizer is a must, and you need to let it absorb into your skin first. Also, it's important not to get too much mineral makeup on the brush...swirl it in all the way, and tap off all the excess. Then you just buff it on. It's not the same technique as applying regular loose powder with a brush. I'm sure there are online tutorials, either on the BE website or YouTube. They used to include an instructional DVD with the starter kit, but I got that seven or eight years ago, so I don't know if they still include that.
