we visited an older family member today. Her house was freezing cold and she came to the door wrapped in blankets and shawls. She does not run her heating to save money. Right now she has no water - she is melting snow to wash and drink etc. She has little food in the house. She refused all offers of help, of coming to stay with us, of coming to us for a day over Christmas. I have no idea what to do to help her - and she is on my husband's side of the family and the situation is complicated so apart from gently insisting and being rebuffed with offers of help, I am lost as to what to do next. My heart breaks to imagine her living that way and being alone at this time of year. Please pray for her.
Edit to add: she just literally called and DH is heading over to her house as her pipes have now burst.

Oh, dear. I know you really want to help! I will definitely pray for her.
Could you anonymously deliver some groceries to her doorstep? Maybe she would use them if they just "appeared."

Oh goodness, this is so sad. I was thinking the same as Nancy, how about arranging an anonymous delivery of some goods. Perhaps make an anonymous donation through a financial institution? ...
Of course, praying for the situation.

Oh my! May her heart be opened to accept what has been offered in great charity. Praying for this situation (including the added burden of burst pipes).

Oh, wow.
I am so glad your husband is available to help. I'm still praying; she has been on my mind all afternoon.

Poor dear. She sounds like my dh nana. All we can do is make offers and visit with her. My dh got her to agree to come with us Christmas Eve to my sisters for a little bit. Luckily, she has lots of family and does take most offers she gets, you can't make her use her heater or air conditioner in the summer thoush.
Praying for her
