Homeless shelters and food banks always, always need donations this time of year. (Our homeless shelters are totally full and we still have hundreds on the streets in our county, so that's what we do for Christmas...warm socks, gloves, stuff like that.) Younger children could make cards for the shelter residents.

Or Christmas cards or gifts for a nursing home. Finding out who at a nursing home has no family to visit and visiting them.
