As we're nearing break-time from "school", I thought I'd give a try to potty training my 2.5yr old son. Tips? The biggest concern I have is that he seems to have hard poo sometimes. I'd love to have three kids using the bathroom and only one in diapers, though!

I have 6dss, and the youngest I ever did potty-training was with my oldest. It was two and a half months shy of his 3rd birthday, and it went very well. The rest were just too busy with their little boy lives (and their older brothers,) to bother with taking the time to use the bathroom.
If your ds is having hard bowel movements, I would mention that to your pediatrician. Is he drinking enough water, getting enough fruit and veggies, fiber? I have one ds who has developed a difficulty with bm's in the past few months. Too hard. Even water and more fruit/veggie and exercise aren't helping, so he is on miralax (ordered by his ped.) for the next month. He is taking it once a day.
Best of luck with that potty training!

I have two boys, in the process of toilet training ds2 who just turned 3. We started right after Thanksgiving.
From previous experience, I think of the training in stages (I like benchmarks whenever I can find them!)
Learning the process of going to the bathroom
Responding to his own urges to go (instead of my reminders)
Going without assistance.
Staying dry during the day.
Staying dry during the night.
BMs are another category, also with several benchmarks. We had real issues with ds1 with fear. We had to give Miralax so he couldn't hold it in.
Our second son is showing some of the same fear, although we've been fortunate that he is doing most on the potty with some urging.
I don't think there is any way around it, at least with my boys. It's a control issue, and they just have to decide for themselves to get over it, which is what my ds1 did.

I don't know, after potty-training 5 boys, I think 2.5 may be a little on the early side. Or possibly my boys are all just incredibly stubborn and I am incredibly lazy. (Both of which are also distinct possibilities.) but, honestly, *most* of the people I talk to who have lots of boys say their boys were later than girls, and it wasn't unusual for them to be 3 (or older). I know someone will write in and tell you their boy was potty-trained at 18 months, so I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying... if it takes a while, don't freak out. It sounds as if it's pretty normal.
Anyway -- since I am not the greatest potty-trainer in the world but I do have a lot of boys -- my only other tip is : do not try to train a boy to go standing up. Do it sitting down until he has the hang of that. The standing up part will come pretty quick, and then you will be wondering what that smell is in your bathroom.

I agree with Angel- 2.5 is young for boys. You might have better luck this summer when he's older and not wearing as many clothes!!

Ok, maybe we'll wait, then!
I have experience already with children and Miralax...my second daughter is still taking it to help keep her regular. She was actually having such a hard time before that it developed into encopresis and we had to re-train her muscles to work right.

I have 4 boys- 3 were potty trained around 2.5 and the 4th was around 3 plus 4/5 months. The one potty trained latest was SO much easier! He was stubborn at first but once he was on board and got the hang of it he did beautifully! Accident free after a couple weeks, but with the others they were still having accidents months later

We didn't train our son until he was 3 years and a few months. We used Potty Scotties instead of Pull-ups. Another mother gave me some advice that worked like a charm for DS. She said to remove the child-size seat and turn him around backwards on the toilet. The narrower end of the seat better supported his body so he didn't feel like he was going to fall in. Since the larger part of the opening was in front of him, he could see into the toilet so it wasn't just this big scary hole underneath. Once we tried that, he was trained within a few days.

I just told DH today that I'm going to wait. I'll remember that trick for sitting backwards!

Oh, thank goodness! Our almost-three (in mid-January) oldest son isn't potty trained, and I was starting to feel like a failure. He can use the potty on command (if I ask him to pee) but if he's wearing underwear or going bottomless he wets the floor and being wet doesn't bother him.
He refuses to poop in the potty, and has started going to hide when he has to, and we get to guess, chase him, and then clean up. Any suggestions?

Ladies, I've got twin 3 1/2 yr olds (they turn 4 in May). Other than the occasional "yay, we're on the potty" stand up pee fests, nada. I WISH THEY WOULD JUST GET IT (diapers for two? For nearly FOUR YEARS!?!?).
It doesn't help that they are severely speech delayed, and small for their ages (they just started wearing 3 pants late this fall, and they are still big in length and width). They just aren't ready.
Of course, I've got one of those DH's who potty trained at 18 mos. He potty trained at night first. His mom heard someone in the bathroom in the middle of the night, got up to see who it was (DH is the 11th of 13). She saw him, turned around to go back to bed, stopped mid-hallway, turned BACK around and double checked. Sure enough, it was an 18mos old DH. He does, however, have a sister only 14 mos older than he is, so I am sure that that went a LONG way in helping him get it.

Ohhh it is soooo good to hear I am not alone. My little boy turns 3 in two weeks. I first tried training him over the summer by letting him go bare bottom and using a little potty. He did great and was 100% trained WHEN BARE in just two days. But put undies on him and he was totally confused. After weeks and weeks and weeks of this we took a break. We tried again after Thanksgiving but my daughter (who is 18M now) wound up having to spend a few days at the children's hospital and my son was staying with my inlaws. So potty training was derailed. So we are currently on try #3 here. He has good days and bad....today was awful! I find training FRUSTRATING and this is my oldest so he is my first I ahve had to train.

Mama Fence,
Just wanted to encourage you, I've just finished training my 2.3ds what a relief to put away those nappies.
