Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Moms~

Hosting an Advent dinner party tomorrow evening. There will be 5 families present, with a total of 8 children...all 6 and under.

I thought of doing a Jesse Tree together and having the kids color the ornaments, but I think the little boys (6 of them) will lose interest really quickly...there are a lot of ornaments...

Any ideas for simple yet instructive Advent activity that we could all do together?

Too early to do O Antiphons? I'm thinking so...

Help, please. T minus 29 hours.

Do you have time to make some dough so they could make ornaments?

I think O Antiphons is a good idea, but perhaps making the flour/salt dough and giving some Christmas cookie cutters, roll it out, cut them out, poke a hole and bake will be Christmas ornaments.

And they can paint them if they wish later?

Actually, we also themed the whole dinner to be Mexican because of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe the next day.

So...we could also do something related to OLOG?

Beyond coloring sheets, I am no good at planning things like this.

Believe it or not--I don't even own Christmas cookie cutters.    Wow. How sad is that?!!? Maybe I need to go to Michael's...

OLG craft -- God's Eyes. It's been so long, but I loved doing that. Yarn and popsicle sticks.

Lacy summarized quite a few crafts at Catholic Icing, including Paper Dali's Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Those are really nice.

You could do a simplified Jesse Tree if you wanted with only the most significant people.

As an example the ancestors mentioned or pictured in The Tree of Jesse section of my copy of An introduction to the Liturgical Year are Adam, Noah, Abraham & Isaac, Jacob, Boaz & Ruth, Jesse, David, Solomon and Joseph "The husband of Mary".

Here's another Our Lady of Guadalupe craft Paper Bag Tilma

Re: O antiphons

Last year I combined this activity Meaning of Emmanual with this activity
O Antiphons

We did the Making Music Praying Twice Meaning of Emmanuel activity the Friday before the O Antiphons started.

And then we added the symbols from the Domestic Church page on the appropriate day, after saying the prayers and singing the appropriate verse from O Come Emmanuel.

If I was doing this for a party I'd consider doing the Meaning of Emmanuel section during the party and have the symbols and prayers to take home.

I love the paper bag tilmas myself. We still haven't done this, but I'm going shopping and requesting paper bags today!

PS. 5 families and only 8 children?! I feel like all the families in my circle are starting to have so many kids I can only have one family over for dinner at a time!

Maybe you could have them make paper bag tilmas and then turn it into a tilma game like Jessica did for All Saints' Day.

I'm not sure God's Eyes are great for kids 6 and under... Maybe the 6 year olds. Anyone can scribble on a paper bag and toss roses

Ooh! You could grab a cheap bag of powdered sugar doughnuts and make edible advent wreaths for dessert!

Actually, all five families (including ourselves) struggle with infertility or secondary infertility (multiple miscarriages or inability to become pregnant after having children), now that I think about it. Huh. And this party is not for an infertility support group, either...this just happened to be who responded to our invite. What are the odds?

Ok. I dropped the ball. We ended up filling paper bags with sand and candles for luminaries with the children. My catechetical hopes were dashed--I ran out of time and energy.

HOWEVER

I am so stealing some of these ideas for my own littles for the next few days and weeks of Advent.

Thank you all for sharing!!! I really appreciate all the last minute input--I know...I should have planned sooner.

Thank you, again!
