Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My husband found this this morning and thought you'd be interested if you're up late. We like to show the children some of these when we can muster the odd hours!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20101208/sc_space/meteorshower andtotallunareclipsetowowskywatchersthismonth

Skywatchers, grab your blankets. December's night sky spectacular will feature the best meteor shower of 2010 as well as the only total lunar eclipse of the year -- sights that should outshine any New Year's Eve fireworks display in terms of sheer wonder.

The massive Geminid meteor shower returns every year, so you'll have more chances if the cold proves too daunting on the night of Dec. 13. But anyone in North America who skips the total lunar eclipse on the night of Dec. 20 will be missing what promises to be the best lunar eclipse show until April 2014.

There's more at the link.

Thanks for posting this. I had read about the lunar eclipse last week and was excited to hear this was coming. Here is additional info from the NASA site with all the veiwing specifics.

NASA Eclipse website

And a nice graphic:

Shadow and Substance has a nice animated clip of the upcoming event. And you can also click on a specific link there for your time zone to see the above graphic specific to your times.

Oh, wow!

What a great graphic explanation. My husband will appreciate seeing this and I think that it will explain an eclipse to the children very well, too.

Thanks for the links!

Thanks! We missed it, too, too cloudy here. Maybe we could remind each other by posting the day before :-)

You're welcome, Viviane . Even though last night was the peak night for the meteors, they are saying tonight will be high volume and good show as well. The showers are an event that spans many days, so you haven't necessarily missed them.

And this was a good reminder for me because I was focusing on the eclipse not the meteor shower dates (I usually focus on August's Leonid meteors because it is so much warmer for viewing). Since we are having a really warm December we can probably go out tonight without much discomfort.

Bumping this...

Tonight is the night for the lunar eclipse. It's a beautiful full moon tonight and I remembered on my drive this evening when I saw the moon. It will be totally shadowed tonight at 2:45 AM Eastern. It will be nicer for those of us in Western and Pacific to be at least a little earlier.

Here's hoping for clear skies for everyone...

We are supposed to have clear skies but no one wants to get up and watch the thing in the freezing cold!

We are watching right now...very cool (and our weather is pretty mild so a jacket is all we need). So overall great viewing conditions here.

We watched the moon go into its total eclipse this morning. Of course, by the time the eclipse is over, the sun will have risen and the forecast is for clouds and snow.

My hubby and I got up early to watch this. A perfectly clear night here. It's the first time either one of us has seen an eclipse.    Unfortunatly we got up a little late so we only got to see it as it began waning. It was still very cool.

Hubby and I woke up about 4 so we saw it as it was waning but it was amazing to see. It was COLD and windy outside and after we came in we realized we could see it from our bedroom windows!

I didn't realize that this was the first total lunar eclipse since the time of the Council of Trent (says my hubby --this is how he measures time). Very cool.

I had been pointing out the very bright moon and landscape to the children these last two days and I got up several times to see it so as to show it to the little children but couldn't find it and/or had some clouds, but I could see the very very dark land. Several of the older children saw the darkness. So impressive.

Is it true that from this day the hours of sun are longer? If so - Yea!
