I'm trying to find "good for you" books for the kids..
oldest boy is getting one on Baden Powell (boy scouts), older 3 girls getting ones on body changes, modesty, girl stuff.. youngest girl getting The Three Gifts of Christmas encourages generosity..
Now I have 4 boys.. almost 8yrs, 6yrs, 2 yrs, and baby.
and story books to be read to them are fine.. doesn't have to be something they get to handle w/o supervision.. though those are nice too.

Lately my 7 year old son and I have enjoyed reading the Burgess animal stories together. We just finished Old Granny Fox. The books have short chapters which helps my son with narration. : )

Trinity, my dd11 loves stories with animals. She is a good reader and still very young and playful. Would this series be appropriate for her?

Jodie, if they are "into" Scouting, I did find some books by Burgess specifically on the adventures of Scouts. There is a free excerpt to look over here. I ordered my books as hardcover reprints at the Thornton Burgess site. Some are also available as paperbacks as Amazon. I really liked the way they combined adventure with the values of Scouting (which are, really, our Christian values).

I ended up going through some of the lovely picture books on Christmas and picking some of those.. like An Orange for Frankie and The Donkey's Dream and The Christmas Miracle of Jonathon Toomey

Those are all great books, Jodie! They will love them for many years. The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey is a BIG favorite here!

Oh I think so! : ) His books are also wonderful for older children and adults alike. We usually read several chapters aloud each day and even my husband and mother -who is here for the holidays- enjoy hearing the next part of the story.
You may have luck finding his books at your library, and they are available inexpensively on Amazon. Dover did reprints for $2 to $3 each and with amazon's free shipping and 4 for 3 deals on many of the books it is easy to build a nice collection.

oh how did I miss that the first time??? or did I just forget (that's getting to be a problem at times)
I read An Orange for Frankie tonight.. and read the postscript about the real Frankie 
I do much better at not reading through tears if I'm not "surprised" but I thinnk the kids really liked it.
