Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're a pretty dysfunctional family. I wish we weren't, but the fact is, in many ways we just are. I have three children, the oldest of which has always taken (commanded?) most of my attention. Because of various challenges, behavior mostly, we don't have a real history of doing much for Advent. My kids are older (embarrassingly so, considering how long I've had to implement some traditions) and I don't have any traditions from my childhood and dh is a lapsed Catholic so he doesn't care.

So, if you were to incorporate a new tradition, something that can be fun to make or do, where would you start?

I would start with the Advent wreath. It's simple and enjoyable (everyone seems to like lit candles).

I second the Advent wreaths. Children love Advent calendars too. We use the paper ones in our home, purchased from Vermont Christmas Company, but there are reusable styles available too.
