Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a collection of Advent books that I have been slowly adding to over the years. Each year I try to add 2-3, and it's like a delightful treasure hunt for me as these books pop up in unexpected places.

This year I added:
A Small Miracle by Peter Collington (via Bookmooch )
The Story of the Three Wise Kings by Tomie DePaola (from Betterworldbooks- thanks for the tip, Erin)
St. Francis and the Christmas Donkey (Found at the library's used book sale).

I was thrilled to add these to our collection. The library here only has one of those three.   I also just bit the bullet and bought Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl S. Buck after reading all the rave reviews here and not being able to find a good used copy.

What have you added to your books this year?

I'm trying to display restraint this year, Melinda.

Those are great finds!

I can't remember what I've picked up this year except
A Child's Christmas in Wales
Kersti and St. Nicholas by Hilda Von Stockum

We added a couple this year:

The Last Straw by Paula Palangi
The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry
Great Joy by Kate Di Camillo

and this is a find I'm really enjoying.   I've been trying to find a good poetry book for the season, I like this one:

Oh, Holy Night!

I almost forgot to add this (I recently ordered it and hasn't come yet). I'm looking forward to previewing it before reading it to the kids:

Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien

O.K. that's it for new purchases, but I'm making a list for next year

Oh, me too! My brother read it to his son and I wanted to add it to the rotation.

Where have I been? I have never heard of this book
Which edition did you get? I saw on Amazon that some of the letters have been shortened

I saw that on Amazon too. So it's been on my list of finds. I just recently saw a listing for the blue cover revised edition post 1991 which includes unpublished letters and drawings. Really excited, can't wait to get it. (oh, ended up paying $11.49 for it )

Glad you mentioned this book Grace, I'll have to remember to reserve from our library.

Actually it makes a nice addition for an older reader.

I love the Last Straw, just ordered it for my three nephews, still little yet but I know their Dads will love it.

Jenn,
I've never heard of that Van Stockum book, sounds like a treasure

Melinda

Glad you got the Three Kings Does a wish list count? Like Jenn I'm restraining myself this year, but as I finished off a draft from last year I made a new wish list. One's I rate a 5 Star.

Stephen's Feast - Jean Richardson
The Nativity Story - Geraldine McCaughrean
Father and Son - Geraldine McCaughrean
The Fourth Wise Man - Mary Joslin
The Animal's Christmas Carol - Helen Ward
Room for a Little One - Martin Waddell

I had to hunt down for a few years a decently priced copy, as it is rare. I was a bit disappointed with the story when I got it, though. It probably won't be reprinted because it does have some racist undertones for Black Peter.

I saw your post of reviews, Erin, and was nodding my head in agreement with your assessment.

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts, really appreciate knowing that.

Glad you agreed with my assessment It is so disappointing when the pictures appear great and the text lets down the story.

This is our first year to have an Advent reading list of books!

We just got The Donkey's Dream, The Crippled Lamb, Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend, and The Miracle of Saint Nicholas. We also got the CCC DVD about St. Nicholas. My son has fallen prey to all the Santa hoopla, and now thinks that receiving presents is the point of Christmas, so we're trying to counter that this year.
