Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi,

My 7yo dd, I'm sorry to say, still does not know the Mass responses. I want to start having her memorize the responses, but I'm a little stumped about whether to teach the present translation, the translation that will be adopted in 2011, or even to learn them side-by-side. She's in first grade and won't receive FHC until the spring of 2012.

I'm sure there's a common-sense answer to this, but it's escaping me. I'd love your thoughts. Thank you!

when in 2011 will they be adopted? because if it's early I would just hold off and start her on memorizing the new ones WITH YOU since everyone will be in the same boat about having to learn them

I have heard a couple people on here say the time of adoption depends on the diocese, but for ours, at least, it won't be until Advent 2011--so a year from now, basically. But good idea in general! We will *all* need to learn the new ones--maybe my youngest will learn them earlier this way, too.

Ah.. I wouldn't have her learning them a year ahead.. because she won't get to use them and it'll likely be a bit confusing and discouraging that the one you're learning doesn't work during Mass.

This is a big question within Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (that teaches Mass prayers from the age of 3!) - and the answer that they have reached makes total sense to me: teach what the child hears every Sunday and holy day NOW. They will learn the new translation with everyone else.

AND it leads into good discussions (teachable moments!) about translations, foreign languages, the inability to get *just* the right meaning in a different language, etc. And how God still takes our prayers and uses them for His purposes!

Children Discover the Mass: Lessons, Crafts, Cutouts, and More by Mary Doerfler Dall- This is a fantastic book to help you teach children Kindergarten through 2nd grade all about Mass! 28 full lessons broken into 5 categories (Before We Begin Mass, Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, and Concluding Rite) explaining to the students the parts of Mass and what happens. This book helps children understand what we say and do during Mass and why. Each lesson is thoroughly thought out with background, what to say to the students, a craft with easy step by step directions with illustrations and patterns, and review questions. The lessons are written so that the students will understand and comprehend what the roles of the priest, the other liturgical ministers, and the community are during Mass. The students will also learn the responses as well as all of the other rituals and actions that take place during the liturgy. The book also includes a 32 page missal, "My Mass Book" for the students to color and take with them to Mass. Also in "My Mass Book" are the written responses to help the children participate in Mass. (*Children Discover the Mass is spiral bound to make copying easier.)

Click here to see some of the book then click on Sample.

Limited preview to see some of the book.
