Yesterday our bishop announced that we will have female altar servers, parish by parish decision.
Bishop Loverde Allows 1962 Latin Mass, Expands Altar Server Policy
Arlington Catholic Herald Article
I fear the mud slinging, division, polarization/"bi-partisanship" (if you will), and anger that will stem from this decision.
I'm dealing with my own and and . I feel like I've been thrown a and .
How's that for multi- emoticons? But truly, that's the range of emotions!
Prayers, Please!!!

Jenn,
I am right with you. We were shocked and dismayed and definitely felt blind-sighted. And yes, it will get ugly.
My husband's reaction was "So, I guess it's okay to move out of the Diocese now?!" We have been so blessed in our diocese and felt it was a safe haven of Catholicism (with a few parishes that were certainly an exception to that). OUr children understand our objections and I don't think it will have an immediate impact on them, but the long range effects, especially on vocations, can be seen in other dioceses.
I am pretty sure our pastor wouldn't dare allow the altar girls, but the whole diocese will suffer for this.
What is next, take out all of the kneelers?
Trying to be charitable and praying hard.

Ladies,
Pray for conversion of your bishop on this. We had a similar situation in Raleigh when our bishop DID take out the kneelers int he Cathedral and wreaked havoc on the venerable Church. Then about 5 years later -- something happened -- he started leading Marian pilgrimages, renovated the Cathedral back to what it had been (down to refurbishing the terrazo marble floors) AND returned the kneelers.....
so conversion and change of hearts do occur....
I'll send up a prayer, though. My brother and SIL are in the diocese -- tehy're probably cheering about the announement

Please also pray for the individual pastors -- each pastor is allowed to decide for their parish. I feel like the bishop has put the pressure that he was feeling directly on their shoulders.

Praying for our bishop and pastors..."all for God's greater glory"...giving thanks for the many holy priests we do have in our diocese, as well.

Praying for Bishop Loverde, the priests of the Arlington diocese, and all of its members...may the Holy Spirit guide you through these times with wisdom and charity.
This diocese will always be near and dear to my heart.

I will pray for your Diocese!
May I please ask, and forgive my ignorance, but isn't it ok'ed by the vatican for girls to be altar servers? I let my twin dd's serve because my pastor told me that it was ok and in union with Rome. They are very respectful up there, but I wouldn't want them to do that unless it was completely all right. They were yearning to do this and if I had to tell them no they will be crushed....sigh...why can't things be easy and clear cut as far as obedience goes...I am just a dumb sheep that needs clarification...

Donna, you're not a dumb sheep (we're all learners , right?)...well, except maybe Jenn...I think she knows everything (and I mean that in the kindest way, Jenn). And from what I gather, the answer to your question is yes. It is okay but not preferred. Basically I understand it to mean that girls can be used if there are no boys. The reason I'm upset is because this is just one more of our traditions within Catholic culture that is being eroded away here. And like Jenn said so well, there will be a lot of division about this and with much of it on a very personal level.
Praying for charity too, Jenn.

Well, if we ever get together (as a group) in person, I wanna sit beside YOU! Osmosis, ya' know!
On a more serious note, I got an email today from a father in our hs group who wanted to urge all of us to make it known to our local priests where we stand on this issue. Good idea to pass that around, I think, because otherwise our priests might not know our concerns. Either way, I'm pretty sure I know which way Fr. Riley will go on this one.

Ooooh, you have Fr. Riley!
Yes, we need to write letters. Our group was suggesting that each person write, so married couples would have 2 per household. The Bishop said he received letters on requests to have altar girls. I guess I'm frustrated because he didn't ask for our opinion. I was happy with status quo...and usually people don't write when things are going well, KWIM?

I do KWYM. It's a combination of shock (was there any discussion of this issue previous to this week's letter? I'm not very consistent about reading The Herald cover-to-cover...) and frustration at some groups' efforts to always be changing everything. It's just like with anything else I guess...squeaky wheel get the grease
