Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Due to medical reasons, I have had to immediately stop nursing my 14 and 1/2 month old DD. Aside from being torn up over this- your prayers for my daughter, please- I am seeking ways to lesson the pain involved as I stop producing milk.

Please share any ideas you have about the best way for me to proceed.

Thanks,

I have had to do this in the past - possibly your situation is different, but the two things I would do would be to stick cabbage leaves in my bra (changing when they got warm/limp) and also pumping when I got *too* full. Yes, it took a little longer to stop producing milk that way, but I was very prone to plugged ducts and mastitis so I had to try to avoid that. I only pumped a bit at each time, just enough to lessen the engorgment/pain.... then again when it got bad.

Oh Tracey, how heartbreaking. I hope you were able to talk over the reason with someone with access to Dr. Hale's book on medications and breastfeeding. His information is the best out there and it does sometimes contridict common medical practice of having mothers stop breastfeeding for everything.

I would agree with Amy that the cabbage leaves would help. And I think there's some herbs.. sage comes to mind that will help reduce milk production as well.

Lots of hot showers and a big bowl full of hot water that you can slip off to if you can't shower- honestly, mine were all 'all or nothing' quitters and I found that just taking a couple days of pain and lots of long hot showers made the physical process pretty quick... (problem with pumping is the obvious supply and demand thing!)
