Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

one of the great wisdoms I have found here is the importance of framing my teaching not just around facts, but with the aim of teaching my children HOW TO LEARN. tonight I heard a radio program that supported that from a clinical standpoint, discussing the role of dramatic play on developing minds and the importance of joy, not stress, on learning abilities. it was really fascinating. (it also made me wonder if the unschoolers are right about even more things than I already suspected .) it is inspiring me to find a more engaging way of reaching my children and bringing more JOY into our school time.

the program was about Adele Diamond, a cognitive developmental neuroscientist from Canada. here's a description: "What Adele Diamond is learning about the brain challenges basic assumptions in modern education. Her work is scientifically illustrating the educational power of things like play, sports, music, memorization and reflection. What nourishes the human spirit, the whole person, it turns out, also hones our minds."

a lot of it sounded very much like the discussions here. just, you know, from a neuroscientist's point of view. ( for us!) I wish I could summarize more of her salient points, but it's late and I wouldn't be able to do it justice. I hope to listen to the podcast again; perhaps I can add more comments later. has anyone else heard of her? or of an early childhood curriculum called "Tools of the Mind"?

if anyone is interested, here it is: Learning, Doing, Being: A New Science of Education

DISCLAIMER: she was interviewed by Krista Tippett on Being, an American Public Media show I know nothing about. so if you hate NPR, please don't berate me.
