Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What do you serve with your soup meals? We love soups this time of year but I always feel like I should serve "something" else along with it. Especially for DH after he's been working hard all day. And I don't "always" like to serve bread/biscuits with it. Sometimes a little variety is good!

well I do usually have some sort of bread thing..

bread
toast
biscuits
rolls
tortillas
crackers
croutons

Some soups are good served over rice or pasta

a salad can go nicely with a soup

maybe potato wedges/french fries depending on the type of soup

cheese is a good topping to hearten soups, other toppings... chopped or thinly sliced veggies (onions, tomatoes, cabbage etc), sour cream, bacon bits or browned hamburger or sausage, popcorn, potato or tortilla chips

quesadillas are a good side

come to think of it.. any sort of filled bread type of thing would work well..

sandwiches, of course
meat and veggie pie type of things (like cornish pasties)
anything wrapped in a tortilla

We usually have bread, quick breads or crackers and some kind of fruit (with vegetables in the soup). Dh sometimes has a sandwich or salad, if the soup isn't quite substantial enough for his appetite.

I love soup with roasted chicken. Often one roasted chicken isn't a lot of meat for our entire family, so a good, creamy soup extends the meat, so to speak.

A bavarian tradition is "Suppe und Süß", when translated literally means Soup and Sweet. The families I know plan such a meal once a week.
First a soup is served and then followed by a filling sweet dish. For example:
Apfelstrudel and vanillasauce
Dumplings with vanilla sauce or fruit compote
Kaiserschmarrn and cherry compote

This is a very tasty tradition, IMO!

Thank you for all the suggestions! Don't get me wrong....I LOVE bread and biscuit type sides. But sometimes my DH would like something a little different!

We just had soup last night. Since we were at football practice, I cooked the soup in the crock pot so it would be ready when we got home. But what to serve with it? I didn't have any bread. I needed something quick since everyone was starving. So I put out a bowl of cheese (cut into cubes), a bowl of cashews that I had in the pantry, and a bowl of sliced apples.
Everyone raved about the great dinner I had prepared!

I usually serve apple slices and cheese and crackers depending on the type of soup.

For me, it depends on the soup...

Black bean soup - warm tortillas or tortilla chips (sometimes turned into nachos for hubby)

Tomato soup - grilled cheese, of course! Macaroni and cheese is also good with this too.

Tuscan Bean Soup - fresh bread or biscuits

Sometimes I will do a light pasta on the side, and my husband (being Filipino) usually has a bowl of rice alongside no matter what we're having. I almost always do a vegetable, fruit, and/or salad as well.

In addition to some of the above ideas, I will often do grilled cheese sandwiches cut into quarters. This way it can be just a garnish or side with a large bowl of soup instead of the soup as a side to the sandwich.

Cornbread, salad, sandwiches, grilled cheese, sweet potato salad, butternut squash casserole, stuffed potatoes, or a sweet dessert-like healthy item such as peach potato puffs.

Tagging on to Jay's theme, a plain baked potato with simple toppings like butter and sour cream would be really good with soup or stew

I'm all about the carbs---bring on the bread with the soup! My favorite of course is tomato soup with grilled cheese...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Seriously, I think I could give up chocolate, ice cream and even soda before I could give up bread!

I serve soda bread or a zuccinni cheese loaf or something like that if the soup is more of a light type. I also fill in with a more filling dessert- such as an apple crisp, or gingerbread cake!

Lori- I agree wholeheartedly with you. My German granny served rye bread and butter with EVERY meal. Thank goodness none of my kids are gluten intolerent!!
