Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This week we enjoyed this new (2009) picture book about a young boy who sails from Rhodes to Alexandria with his father, a merchant ship's cook. Set in the first or second century B.C., the book portrays the types of ships and the dangers of sailing the Mediterranean during this time period It features two of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse at Alexandria (the Pharos). The illustrations as accurate and well done.

While reading this book, I mentioned to my boys that St. Paul also had been in dangerous waters and even shipwrecked in the Mediterranean and that according to legend the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament) had been made by 70 Jewish scholars in the Pharos (hence the name, Septuagint).

This is a very exciting picture book, especially for boys, which would go well with studies of Ancient Greece, ancient shipbuilding/sailing, lighthouses, or even a study of Acts, as the ships were basically the same in Paul's day.

This sounds great! I just checked our library's online catalog and they don't have it.

I don't quite understand our library system - it's very large and not experiencing some of the financial setbacks that we've heard about in other parts of the country - but it seems that every book that I see recommended at 4real is not available at our library.

Sounds like it would be a great addition to the Egypt picture books list I had compiled. Checked to see if our library has it but their site is down this morning. thanks again for the recommendation.

And I've added an Amazon link here:
