What do you think? I have a nook and dh is getting a kindle. He wants to get dd one (either one) for christmas. She reads alot and it is really tough to keep her stocked with books (not much in our towns library). I thought it would be good for her for her independent reads at least. But I have reservations and not sure why. I am very strict with internet and things - maybe it is the notion that 1 million books will be at her figertips.

well, they're only at her fingertips if you buy them for her. you could set it up so you have to approve/buy/download all the books she reads and it'd be safe. at any rate, they are extremely easy to monitor: all your books are shown and even the ones you "remove from device" can still be seen in your Amazon account. don't know if that helps, but I do love my Kindle.

I really love my Kindle! I would get it, just make sure that your DD is aware that Amazon will send you an e-mail informing you of all purchases made (even free books include a confirmation e-mail). :)

What is the benefit of a Kindle over reading on the internet? Dd reads alot of old books on the internet and I worry about her eyes, should I?

I have seen quite a bit that suggests Kindle reading is much easier on the eyes --more like an actual print page. Computer monitor reading can be very straining for some people.
Also, Here's a comparison of Kindle, Nook and iPad.

Thanks for that Michele
Do you find the smallness of Kindle a pain?

Oh I don't have one yet --it's on my wish list. ;-)
And there's a larger sized Kindle too: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002GYWHSQ
but I've heard good things about the smaller size so that's the one I hope to get.

I just bought my dd nook today. She loves it. Hers is on my nook acount. Any book she buys will show up on my nook! Also, there is no need to lend - we have unlimited access to each others books. A good feature since I heard that not every book has the "lend me" feature!

Why did you choose a nook over a kindle? Sounds exciting

I chose the nook because I liked the idea of be able to go into the store to ask for help. Also, I like Barnes and Noble and want to support them (not that I don't order my share of amazon books. It seemed that both were so similar that having a store nearby for assistance was a plus. I bought a nook last spring, so it made sense to buy one for dd - that way we can share books without charge or any time restraints!

Honestly I am torn between the two (Nook and Kindle). I like both of them. Can anyone give me a clear idea of why one is better than the other??

Just thought I'd add this information for any Australians considering a Nook. I've been researching whether to buy a Kindle or Nook.
The kindle is better for Aust. For a start, the 3G network only works within the US due to licensing restrictions. Add to that, you can’t use either the 3G or wireless of Nook to purchase ebooks from outside of the US without the use of some free third-party software.

I would love to hear this as well. I went into our local Barnes and Noble and told the guy to convince me that the Nook is better than the Kindle. He really couldn't. Two differences: the Nook battery can be replaced and you can get in store help and deals on books.
I have the Kindle app on my iPhone, but the backlighting kills my eyes. I can't read for a long time on it. Both are on my wish list so if someone else is so inclined, they can pick one out for me.

Oh, and did you see the newest generation Nook? It comes in color so you can get picture books on it. If I don't get one anytime soon, I want to wait until the prices go down on these.

If you do get the kindle I just found a lovely collection of links for books at Jimmie's Squidoo.
Wow KC, picture books!

Does Kindle accept library downloads?
I don't think they do...
Karen T has also researched these and says the Sony is another good one to consider.
