Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Pardon my ignorance, but are there some good booklists for suggested books for independent reading (ala CM, CAtholic, or "classics" - not too important - I just want GOOD books) by grade level?

I have gobs of read-aloud resources, but need some more easier readers for my 6 yr old son that are not big heavy novels and are not uninteresting (or poorly written, or of a bad influence ) early readers either.

Am I making any sense?

There's the 1000 Good Books list from the Classical Christian Education Support loop.

It has a fair number of recommendations for beginning readers.

This was the first list I used when searching for good books before we even started hs. I'll come back with a list of some of our favorites, it's time for bedtime around here

O.K. here is some of our favorites:

Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel

More Arnold Lobel Mouse Tales, Owl at Home, Mouse Soup, Uncle Elephant

Little Bear by Else H. Minarik

The Lighthouse Family by Cynthia Rylant (this might be a little advance for beginning reader but we really enjoyed them)

There are so many more, but I think that is a really wholesome start. Don't forget there are many great Dr. Seuss Beginning Readers as well.

Maybe someone can link to a good old thread about this subject. Good luck and happy reading !

ahhh...thank you so much for the ideas! Jenny, yes, those are goodins' - he has read those and are well loved! Although the Lighthouse Family is new to me - we'll check it out.

The website is itching my scratch, especially. I KNEW that was out there somewhere....

One of my favorite series for early readers for religion are the Dujarie Press series of books recently back in print. There are two sets in print - level 1 and level 2 - both are wonderful and staples of my early reader bookshelf! You can order the set from Mary's Books, or order just individual titles.
