Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi there,

I have spent hours looking for a painting that I saw when I was 14 or 15. I believe it was painted by Salvador Dali, but I can't be sure. I don't remember the name of it either. It was of a man's head in profile (I think he was looking towards the left if you face the painting), blue sky background. The top of the man's head was flipped open like it was on a hinge. The man's head is bald and I think there was something floating above the opened part (butterflies? balls? I can't remember).

Can anyone help me? I need it for next Wednesday...

Thanks!

Ack! I have looked for this for you because Dali is my husband's favorite artist. I'm almost positive it's not a Dali... at least it's not in our Dali book which is supposed to have every known Dali painting. I seem to recall the painting you are talking about and it seems like something by Rene Magritte, but I couldn't find it on a search for his paintings either... I know this is going to bother me until I know... Good luck!

Thanks so much for your effort!

I remember seeing it when I first saw "The Enigma of Hitler," so I thought it was a Dali. But, I've started searching for other artists that might have been shown with him like, Spanish painters, Surrealist painters, etc. and...nothing. Searching for "painting of man with open head" on Google leads to some rather disturbing results and so far, nothing promising.

But I know I am not crazy. The librarian said she remembered seeing that painting and searched for a while. She tried album covers too. Nothing.

If I find it I will post back so it doesn't bother you forever!

Michelle, this sounds so familiar. I do believe some cartoon used an adaptation of this image. But I have NO idea where to start tracking it down!

It sounds very familiar to me, too, though I cannot place it. My first thought was Magritte, but apparently that's not it.
Perhaps from a Monty Python cartoon?

Ooh, I think that is where I saw it!

I recall a very similar image done in the style of Magritte. It was part of an advertising campaign , maybe in the 80's? I'm wondering if it was just created for the ad?
