the title of this book. I have seen this book before yet I know I am not saying the name correctly.
Misty of ChincoteagueChincoteague by Marguerite Henry
It is our narration/dictation excerpt this week in our Writing with Ease book.
Thanks so much!

Well, don't know what I pressed in trying to make the word boldface. Sorry for the confusion!

We say "SHIN-cuh-tig" with the "g" almost sounding like a "k". This end letter pronunciation becomes more pronounced the closer you get to Maryland's Eastern Shore.
And, oddly, Assateague's last syllable is pronounced "teeg" - don't know why. (The ponies swim from one island to the other...)

Thanks, ladies! I knew to ask here would be the answer. I am thankful nobody could hear me saying it this morning to my ds.

Really, Nancy? So this is how the locals on the islands pronounce it? I need to let my dd know - she's very interested in this!

Someone stop me from serial posting...
In looking around online a bit, I see that the emphasis is on the last syllable, like this:
shing-kuh-TEEG

Answers.com has the same basic pronuciation of sheen-kuh-teeg, again with emphasis on the last syllable. Check it out Marybeth...they have an audible example of the pronuciation! That's so helpful!

Jen!!! Thanks so much. This is very helpful. Now can I give you some biology terms as well?
My sweet professor at Franciscan University asked me how I ever decoded anything??? I taught myself to read in such a hodge podge way that phonics is a mystery to me. I do much better when I can listen to words and then repeat them to myself. Ear infections....the bane of my existence. I still have the effects of them 30+ later.
I appreciate this so much!! xo

That's how they pronounced it on the audio book version that we listened to.

We were able to visit the two islands a few years ago and they did indeed pronounce them sheen-kuh-TEEG and ass-uh-TEEG.
At least that's what we heard.

We've always said CHIN-cuh-teeg - less of an SH sound, more like the CH (the way it's spelled). I don't think pronouncing the "teague" at the end of Assateague as "teeg" is odd at all. I know a family whose last name "Teague" is pronounced "Teeg." Anyway, for what it's worth, I grew up more or less in Baltimore, and now live in another part of Maryland. For the several years we lived elsewhere, I don't think we ever talked about either island.
Peace,
Nancy
