Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Grunt Padre

I just discovered a tremendous book called The Grunt Padre about the life of Fr. Vince Capodanno who was a Marine chaplain in Vietnam. He was killed in action in 1967.

The book details his life and service, plus includes several of his sermons.
I had never heard of Fr. Capodanno before, and his story is so moving. He was beloved by his men. I believe there is a movement going on now to have him beatified.

I gave this book to my dad for his birthday, and he could not put it down.
It would make great reading for a history study or simply as inspiring reading, especially for older teens or husbands. I believe he will go on to sainthood.

Father Capodanno has been named a Servant of God, and the case for his canonization opened three years ago this month.

There are many heroic Catholic military chaplains, past and present, who have served with honor and placed themselves in harm's way in order to minister at a time and place of great need.

One of my favorites is Father Joe O'Callahan. I first learned about him via an amazing NPR radio piece. Father O'Callahan served in WWII and his sister, a Maryknoll nun, was imprisoned by the Japanese for three years.

My husband read that last year during the Year of Priests and really liked it.

I found out about him/the book, via all the great books that were being mentioned here about priests last year!

Fr. Capodanno is from my hometown. There's a fairly prominant road there named after him, fondly known as "Fr. Cap!"

I have had that book on my wish list at pbs and Amazon for about 2 yrs! And then last weekend I saw the movie at a Catholic bookstore i was visiting but didn't get it.

I've also been listening to an audio version of The Shadow of His Wings about a German priest during WWII. It's quite good also.

I second (or third, fourth or fifth!) this book! I have read it a few years ago and found it so moving and inspirational. I should go back and re-read it.

We did read much of the on-line info about his life this spring when my son did this topic for his Catholic History Fair project.

I haven't read the book yet, though I do want to. Your post is a good reminder.
