HELP! My teen has a commitment once a week where he needs a sack lunch. Also, he has double header baseball games this fall where he will need to eat. He wanted something a little different than PBJ.
Give me ideas. . .please.

bagel & cream cheese? Peanut butter, honey & banana? My kids use butter on the bread instead of mayo when they take a deli sandwich for lunch somewhere, so you don't have to worry about the mayo spoiling.

Sarah,
I 'googled' this very question a few weeks ago in preparation for my three older kids going to 'school' two days a week where they will need a sack lunch. I book marked this page full of great ideas. I also purchased small thermos type containers to keep things hot/cold. These were 65 cents at Family Dollar! HTH!

Since so many kinds of sandwiches can get royally squished in a sandwich bag, making them quite unappetizing , we have bought those disposable gladware containers for packing lunches. Not that we *dispose* of them - but they come in quite a variety of sizes and shapes that are helpful for packing all sorts of things. We use these containers to protect grapes, for a *plop* of hummus, pre-cut orange wedges, etc. They expand the possibilities of what can be packed in a sack lunch. Trailmix - nuts, dried fruit, small pretzels, cheezits, m&m's - whatever combination you come up with - is a good bet with my children.
Peace,
Nancy

We use several different containers for my dh and dd's sack lunches.
To-Go Ware has tiffins
hubby has an insulated Mr. Bento
dd has a regular bento box (2 layers)
some ideas for sack lunches:
soup and bread
hearty salads with dressing in a sidekick container (keep cool with an ice pack)
sushi or kimbap (seaweed-rice-some sort of meat or crabstick or veggie or combo)
edamame (soybean)
spanakopita
cut up fruit, acidulated if the kind that turns brown
cut up veggies & dip (we like hummus or tahini yogurt sauce or baba ghanouj)
pasta salad (keep cool with an ice pack)
trailmix, like nancy said -- i just mix up a whole bunch of whatever's here, usually almonds, dried figs, dates, prunes, craisins, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, a few pieces of dark chocolate
hard boiled eggs
frozen smoothie (veggie and/or fruit) i freeze in the container with some space at top, so it melts just enough and by lunchtime it's still cold
hth!

My son has the Bento food jar. It has 4 compartment, 2 are insulated. The bottom one is the largest, and he will take pasta, or fried rice, or soup or whatever in that. The next one up is usually for veggies. The third is chips or a roll or such and the fourth is fruit. That way the fruit is away from the warm container. There is room on the top of the bag for a sweet in a baggie. He has 2 steel water bottles -- one is for water and the other is gatorade. They clip to the sides of the jar.
He likes the food and that the jar is all stainless steel, so it doesn't look "kid-ish". I bought the food jar from Amazon 3 years ago and it is in awesome shape still.

When we're going out I now make homemade pizza the night ahead. Cut it, cool and put in the fridge. The next day the topping is firm and by the time it has warmed a little in their backpack it's just right for eating, softer but not sloppy. I cut it to fit a square plastic container. Very popular.

Sarah, you might find more ideas here, feeding early morning athletes. My boys always have snacks in their bags: seeds and turkey jerky for emergency protein plus, of course, a lot of gatorade for quick energy, and water.
We've found that what my sons eat between double headers has a lot to do with how much time is in between, and if the location sells food or not. If they have a lot of time, they'll eat big. If they have little time, they don't eat because too much food with little time to digest can be a problem.
Most of the venues we play at sell food. If the team does have enough time between games, it tends to be one spent with the rest of the team hanging out and eating. They ususally get pizza or a burger at the stand. The prices tend to be fair, we like supporting local baseball, it saves us from one more task of packing a meal, and there is the group part of it - standing in line together to order, getting all the food together (12 burgers coming up!), and eating together.
On a side note...One place we play at has one of THE BEST cheeseburgers in our area. I love playing there - YUM! Who knows, something yummy might be a pleasant surprise in your future .
Love,

on the mayo.. you know that it only has to stay cold if it's mixed with other foods.. if you have a little container to put it in so they can add it to a sandwich when they're ready to eat.. you can carry mayo in a sack lunch.
When I can make them cornish pasty type of meals make great lunches.. think of a thick stew wrapped in a bread (pie crust, biscuit, yeast bread).. yummy and self contained and feels more of a "real meal" than a sandwich does.

I haven't read the link, but one of our favorite lunches to pack in the winter (when you feel like something hot) is a hotdog in a thermos (well, when I pack for everyone, I use Mason jars wrapped in a towel). Just put in the hotdog, pour in boiling water from the kettle, seal, and pull out your hot, plumped hotdog at lunch!
