Delving into the world of "natural deodorant"......
I've been trying for a couple of years to get rid of the aluminum-containing brands at our house. However, I don't feel like what we've tried so far are all that good...
So far we've tried Jason unscented (so-so for us) and Kiss My Face (not my favorite).
Any suggestions?

If you buy "deodorant" and not "anti-perspirant" ... than you won't get aluminun (usually). I have a nickel allergy and can't wear anything with less than expensive metal ... and that includes lotions, deodorants, etc.
I've found the Arm & Hammer deodorant (again, NOT the antiperspirant) to be the best for smell and non-reaction.
Hope that helps .... I know they're not natural but they work

None of the all-natural stuff worked for me and I couldn't pay for the just-deodorant varieties after a while anyway.
So in the end - In our house we use a 50/50 mix of baking soda and cornstarch. It's as natural as it gets :)
I used to use just the baking soda, but the cornstarch helps it stay on better actually and it is softer/gentler.
Some people add coconut oil to the mixture and fill their old deodorant bottles with it - it has a low melting point (in the low 70s) so is best kept in the fridge if you have no a/c.
If you add that, you can also add a couple drops of tea tree oil for the antibiotic properties.

I'm hearing you also want to avoid triclosan.. it can do nasty things to thyroid function.

These work with varied success for me (some days great, some days not so much - if I can reapply mid afternoon usually I'm fine even on "bad" days):
coconut oil alone
burts bees baby bee dusting powder, put on my hand and rubbed on
I've never had any luck with commercial deodorants.
I've heard (from doctors at a former workplace) that getting enough zinc can help with body odor.

I have used many different types of organic deodorant over the past 7 years. Most of them don't work very well. It's very disappointing, to say the least. Last year I was was wits end and had decided to go back to "regular" deodorant because I was tired of being embarrassed in my extremely hot and humid summers!!!!
I was at Whole Foods and Pristine Beauty's Take a Wiff! caught my eye, so I decided to get one more brand a try. I have been pleasantly suprised with how well it's worked. On weekends I have spent 8-10 hours outside with Travel Baseball and I haven't been embarrased! . It does really work.
They also recommend to put baking soda on if you need extra protection, and that also helps quite a bit (when I remember).
The price on the web site is more than what I paid at Whole Foods. But, price is a factor with this product. However, the tube is larger than most and it has lasted a long time. In the end I feel like it's worth it if you want something that is natural and works really well.
My next best solution would be what CatholicMommy recommends of baking soda with coconut oil. This works pretty well, but it's messy and needs to be reapplied more often.

apple cider vinegar works too.
and a person's "smell" changes depending on age, health, nutrition, etc.
like when i was younger vinegar worked well for me. not anymore. baking soda works better.
so if one doesn't work, try the other.

Yes, triclosan (also in toothpaste) is another thing I want to see go.
Thanks for all these ideas!

Thank you for the reminder about zinc! I need to look into that for a particular 13 year old girl I know - all new hormones and all takes a TOLL!

I have used the salt sticks with success. None of the other natural deoderants ever worked for me. Best of luck!

How about using lemon juice? Really! Slice a piece and rub under your arm..works very well! Simply wrap in aluminum foil in fridge and use first thing in am, and depending on how many times you think you may need "another squeeze" ~ wink!
Got this great idea from KnowLoveServe's Blog!
p.s. And from experience, please don't use the same day you shave ~ ouch!

I'd like to try this if only for the fun of it! Is there another way to store the lemon without aluminum?

Rubbing alcohol can work, too, and in the summer, I sometimes use corn starch baby powder as well.

CatholicMommy, I'm sure seran wrap or a ziploc baggie would work just as well

So..... for a maybe stupid question. How do you apply the baking soda or baking soda/corstarch without making a big mess of yourself? This is very timely for me because I was actually looking this up to see if there was anything on the forums on this subject just last week. I do not like using antiperspirent/deodorants, but the natural salt stick thingy DID NOT work for me, and I need odor protection or I bother myself! I get it from my Dad. Oh, and do you apply the stuff to damp skin or dry, or does it not matter?
For those of you who use vinegar, lemon, baking soda, all those things that will sting after shaving, what DO you use on a day you've shaved?
I'm very interested in trying these methods, and happy it has come up!

For the shaving sting - once I switched to baking soda and cornstarch (50/50 combination), it was fine.
I also don't rub it into freshly shaved skin - I just pat it.
Slightly damp is good, but I don't have a personal preference.
ETA:
I pat on a 50/50 mix of baking soda and cornstarch - I just use my hand and dry skin, though sometimes I'm a bit damp from shower or what-not and I don't worry about it. Yes there is some powder, but it's baking soda and cornstarch, so I clean up the sink in the process :)
The mix with the cornstarch, even when I rub a bit does NOT sting like the pure baking soda did (the cornstarch is so much softer, therefore less abrasive).
I tend to put it on after putting on my blouse, so that I'm not getting powder all over any more than necessary while getting dressed.
Now, I do still sweat which is actually better than not sweating (I have benign lumps in the area used for nursing, so I'm really adamant about allowing the sweat to pull out anything and everything it can!) - and many times there will be a "ring" around my underarm, from the powder. If I know I will be warmer than usual (summer time especially), I'll wear a thin cotton layer over my blouse, or tuck in some long thin pads I made to catch the sweat. I prefer looser clothing anyway, which helps tremendously.
HTH!

Just a thank you and an update. I tried the 50-50 combination of baking soda and cornstarch and it has worked awesome. Dd and I both use this, and it works even better than store bought anitperspirant-deodorants. We love it. I am still not even half way through the first batch I mixed up 2 mos. ago. It really takes so little, and works so nicely. I was hesitant to try it at first, but I am soooo happy I did. I love how simple, natural, and effective it is. I even use it under the chest/bra area, and feel safe doing so, which I never did with regular deodorants. I just dealt with a little sweat and smell. Thank you again!

Good to know this has worked for you, I think I'll give it a try too. I use natural deodorants at home, but tend to put on the other variety when I go out because unfortunately the naturals just don't seem to work well enough for me to wear socially I'd love to see if this could work. Although for whatever reason I am able to wear just the naturals when pregnant, I wonder why?

Thank you all for this information! I just unsuccessfully tried JASON pure, natural, and organic deoderant stick. I ended up discouraged and went back to store brands. I can't wait to try this!
Thank you again!
