Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Here's a link about a book that my Bishop just wrote ! It's a history about the Spanish Missions -- but these are the ones in Florida. Bishop Baker is from Florida and I think that's why he's put out this book. It looks like it'd be a great resource for those who are seeking Catholic history here in these United States!

Here's the link:

Looks great! I think Kelly is going to love it! Wasn't she just looking for something like this?

Wasn't sure where to put this without starting a new thread, but since it's about Spanish missions of the southeast thought it of interest here. I just read this article about an archeologic dig in Georgia to try to find Santa Isabel de Utinahica. It was a Spanish mission "built in the wilderness in the 1600s for a lone friar who was dispatched to evangelize among the Indians on the edge of Spain's colonial empire." Sounds very interesting especially to those in the area who might be able to take part in the search in some way.

Ooh, Mary, this looks very interesting! I'm ordering the book asap. Florida Mission history is very scarce in children's literature---or in any literature, for that matter! Recently one of my friends kids did a very well-researched paper on the Spanish missions and their positive interaction with certain Indian groups. The response? A teacher who said that that could not have happened, that the Spanish missions didn't have that sort of good rapport with the Indians and that the paper was all made up(despite multiple pages of primary documentation...)

We need to get more books like these out in the market!

A while back, someone mentioned a book about the siege of the Spanish and Indians at St. Augustine, called, appropriately, "Siege". We read this book aloud and really enjoyed it.

Sorry, my link was to a Comcast article so maybe it is only available to Comcast internet users. I found an article about it at another source - article. I would love to be an "amateur archeologist" on this dig.
