That was very interesting especially after just spending a week at fair with this age group and their animals. Annie

I very much enjoyed this article. It reminds me of a discussion we had here on the board a while back, about 12-year-olds captaining a ship, running a farm, etc, giving teens real, even dangerous work to do, and trusting them to do it well.
I think there is a lot to be said for this idea. I wonder how many of us are brave enough to put it into practice in our teen's lives?

Its hard because the fear is not only for the child but fear of losing your child should someone else decide that your choice constitutes neglect or abuse.

that's a good point Lindsay.. and so much will depend on the area you're in.. where I'm at.. someone might say that their 11 yr old split a cord of wood by hand (not with the hydraulic splitters) and people will nod their heads and say "that's good for him/her".. while in other areas they'd be shocked and appalled that a child that age is allowed to use an axe/maul at all let alone to do "so much work".

This is where a good outside program like 4-H or Boy Scouts can help - there are plenty of opportunities for leadership and supervised experiences that really challenge teens.
I remember helping to build our mountain cabin at age 11, 12 and 13, and then learning to nail cedar shakes onto our new addition's roof at 13. I look at my own daughter (12) and wonder if I'd ask her to do the same...but I can attest to the immense sense of pride helping build these structures gave me. No, it wasn't "fun," but it was useful labor that had a real purpose, and we enjoyed that cabin for many, many years. (My parents still enjoy the addition, but now it has a fireproof roof.)

As many of you know we are currently building our own home, just dh, myself and the children. It has been a wonderful opportunity for all of the children to stretch and grow, to see them step up to the mark. From the 4 year old to the 16 year old they have all pitched in a various levels.

I thought of you while I was writing, Erin. Years from now they will step back and remind themselves that they can hang drywall and run wiring, so the silly everyday setbacks of life won't be so difficult to face.

Good read, thanks!
My neighbors are appalled at the work I require of my teen boys. They have to chop wood regularly.
We hung drywall today and repaired plumbing in the bathroom. Tomorrow morning they are taking turns on the drum sander smoothing the kitchen floor.
I have had neighbors tell me I am mistreating my sons by making them work. Ironically, these are the same neighbors that are amazed I have well behaved teen boys
