Has anyone ever taken their own pajamas or gown to the hospital when having a baby? I usually don't, just because those hospital gowns are so glamorous . Ha, just kidding. I usually don't just because I've not wanted anything to get on my own pajamas.
But, with this one, a definite c-section, I shouldn't have those issues so much and at 46 I'm feeling like I should do whatever I can to look a bit nicer while I'm at the hospital. Those gowns from the hospital do absolutely nothing for me and I've always hated the way I look in the new baby pictures taken in them. (Thankfully the focus isn't on me!)
So, now that you're probably thinking I'm so vain for even saying all that ,
I'm trying to decide what type of pajama to take that would work best because of the c-section and wondering if anyone has BTDT?

I ALWAYS bring a new gown and robe to the hospital, Becky! And you're not vain doing that! I loathe having to be at the hospital...so anything I can do to feel more comfortable or to fell "at-home" I ABSOLUTELY pack up in a bag and bring with me!
C-section pj's....lightweight cotton...I wanted NOTHING with an elastic waist or anything around the tummy. I wore a nice soft pink gown with robe when I had a C.

I have had all C/S. I usually only wear their gown the first day... After that I usually wear flannel pants and comfy cotton shirt.

Becky, I think having a baby at age 46 deserves a celebration for Mom with something lovely and cozy to wear while cuddling up to your little one. I used to wear a favorite chenille robe, over the hospital gown if necessary, and pack a nice gown for underneath, if there was a chance to wear it. Just think, if you choose something nice to wear at the hospital, you'll also have it during your babymoon days!

Becky,
I ALWAYS take my own clothes. I have a hard time with the snaps and such for nursing in those "glamourous" gowns. I always wear yoga pants and a tank top for easy nursing and because I am always VERY HOT AND sweaty after delivery. I've never had a c section so I am okay with the pants but I would definitely get some comfy pjs for yourself.

Goodness!! I've always just birthed in my 'ahem' birthday suit! (well, a few times I had my bathing suit on, and Greta came so quickly that I took my skirt off just before her crowning push!) I never thought about birthing clothes! I would definitely bring some pretty, comfy pajamas to wear!

certainly take something that will help you be comfy after the birth
I don't much think about birthing clothes either Lisa. Though depending I usually use my lounging gowns.. they snap up the front and I find them comfy most of the time.. but with the snaps I can easily get out of them in about any position and/or nurse easily afterward or whatever.

I'm with you Servant! I can't offer much advice as to what to wear but happy for you Becky that you have to make this decision!

Having just given birth via c-section to my eighth child (at age 43) I say DEFINITELY bring your own clothes! Nothing makes me feel more human than getting up the next day, showering, and putting on make up and my own pajamas!
Now I'm kinda weird -- I get very cold when I'm pregnant and afterwards -- so I go for a nice flannel nursing gown (NOTHING on the stomach!!!) and snuggle down in the warmth.
Even now, three weeks later, I'm still needing my super-fluffy down to the ankles robe.
The doctor said that when I go through menopause, I'll be one of the strange few that get chills rather than hot flashes. Go figure!

I would go for a gown rather than pants/top to avoid having the pant waist over your abdomen.
Surprisingly, my c-section was not as neat-and-clean as I had suspected it would be. There was still a good amount of vaginal bleeding after.
Personally, I wouldn't want to ruin my own clothes, and I don't care how awful I look in the hospital. I bring underwear and nursing bras, and one outfit to go home in. But that's me.

you know even birthing in my own things at home.. I've never ruined a thing
One hint if you can do it.. is to sit on one of the absorbant cloth/pads and not on your nightgown.. then pull the sheet up over your legs.

My most recent c-sect was the first time I brought real clothes for the hospital stay. I would definitely do it again. I felt better being dressed. I felt like I was "presentable" for visitors (hospital gowns are not designed for modesty!!)
I brought elastic waist, jersey maternity pants. That way the waistband was way above the incision site.
I also brought some maternity shirts; very roomy to nurse in.
I would reccomend pants and a shirt over a long gown as your incision needs to be checked periodically throughout the day. I found it easier to have a very stretchy waistband that could just be pulled out of the way.

New robe, new gowns or loose band shorts and shirt. My post c/s were also messy, and needed extra monitoring. So before I can shower and such, I do get a sleeping nursing bra, so I'm more modest in the hospital gown.
There were some good discussions here from the past years.

I have had 3 c/s and my mom made me get my toes done before the first, flowers and all. And I swear that when I felt my worst after the first (feeling gross and yucky), I looked at my toes and it totally lightened my mood. At least something was pretty. I do not normally get them done, but it is now my own tradtition to get them done the day or two before the c/s.
I was much more comfy in elastic shorts and a cami for nursing than a gown, which I never wear at home. Of course a robe to go for those walks in the corridor.
My fourth will be in Nov, so I am starting my mental packing list too.
Peace and blessings

I pack a nursing gown (and bra) to change into the next day, hopefully after I've had a chance to shower. I find it easier to nurse and go to the bathroom in than the huge hanging hospital gown. I also bring socks with anti-slip marks on them for initial cold chills.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm glad I'm not the only one that wants to have her own things at the hospital.
It sounds like all hospitals are a little different in what they require or even provide. For example, the hospital I go to gives you footie socks with treads and I do use those instead of bringing my own. They also allow me to keep my bra on, even during the c-section. I'm really modest, so having at least one thing (well, I guess it's really two things!) covered helps alot!
But the gowns are huge and flowy and I agree with Barbara that it tends to get in the way when going to the bathroom the first time or two. It's usually a little rough just getting out of bed without battling the gown that wants to fall open in all the wrong places.
I wonder how the nurses feel about people who bring their own things? I don't think it would make their job any more difficult so that shouldn't be an issue. Any OB nurses care to comment?
I'm still up in the air regarding a gown or pajamas. I tend to sleep in pajamas here at home so that is what I'm most comfortable in. My incision is verticle since my first c-section was an emergency. Whatever I wear has to come up really high to get over the top of it so I'm thinking maternitiy PJ's. One thing I definitely want to do is bring my own panties this time! I hate those mesh things! I assume they have to be that way so they can be disposable, but they are so uncomfortable!

I'm the same way, Becky, and have the same kind of incision. I get the way up high waistband and granny panties--really large. The thing about the shorts is that it keeps things in place, in case you do have to wear the mesh things for a while.

Good point about the shorts Jennifer!
I'm finding it difficult, as I do some on line shopping, that most of the styles for maternity PJ's have the waist bands that are "hip high". I know that's the style now, but a waist band that falls just below my belly button wouldn't work. Hmmmm. A gown might be my only choice.
