I think I pretty much have this gluten-free stuff figured out, but there is one thing I do not understand.
Why can't I eat oats? There is no gluten in oats, and yet several gluten-free websites have advised against eating oats. I cannot figure out why, but until I do I have been avoiding them. I'd LOVE to add oats back into my diet (seriously in need of whole grains) but am wondering if I should.
Can anyone explain this to me?

I am not positive, but I think its because of cross contamination from the oats being in the same facility as products containing gluten.

Do you eat corn or brown rice?

From what has been explained to me, most oats are grown in either shared fields or close by to wheat, rye or barley, so there can be an accidental mixing of wheat with oats.

It can be minor contamination, and for those with less severe gluten intolerance, they can add oats back to their diet without problem.

Also, there are now products on the market that tout "gluten free" oats, as the way they are grown can be more guaranteed free of contamination.

We're a wheat free family, not gluten free, and use oats very often with no aggravation whatsoever. But my son can also tolerate rye and barley.

Thanks. I think I may give them a try and see how it goes. I will know within a few minutes of eating them if it was a good decision or bad.

There are gluten free oats. They were a saving grace when dd4 was gluten free for a short time.

Yes, both. But I miss my morning oatmeal!

Bob's Red Mill also makes gluten free oats.

A few celiacs are strongly affected by oats. Most can eat them without issues--even regular ol' Quaker Oats. (That's what we eat.) Those that feel they must be very vigilant can buy certified-gluten free oats, but they are quite expensive...about $6 a pound, I think, which sort of defeats the purpose of eating oats, in my opinion! That is, grains should be nourishing, filling and cheap! ;)

Well, I had some McCann's Irish oats and I seem to be ok. A bit of a stomach ache, but soooo worth it. I'll try again in a few days to be sure.
Thanks for your help and advice, ladies!

This was a while ago, but I had heard that "Canada" Oats were not as likely to be contaminated because they are never stored in the same containers as wheat (unlike American conventional oats). I know our health food store has oats that are specifically labeled as Canadian in the bulk grains section. I assumed it was for this reason (those who were gluten intolerant looked for them specifically).
