We are sorely lacking in our selection of Word Games....probably because I don't really like to play them . The only word game we have is Scrabble, and that's too hard for my age range right now anyway.
My girls are 9, 8, 6.5 that would be playing them together and with us.
Does anyone have any favorites?
Or even ones you absolutely HATE would be helpful too! I love the process of elimination!
Here are the categories at Rainbow Resource to jog your memory:
--Spelling Games
--Vocabulary Games
--Word Game Category at Funagain Games.
--Word Category for Kids from FunAgain Games.

Bananagrams and Pairs in Pears are the two I keep running across. No one I know has them, so I can't borrow.
There was a blog post awhile back that I remembered reading about Pairs in Pears....esp since it's for the younger crowd, and would be a good addition to the younger-games, which I'm always looking for.
Great....thanks, Jenn!

These are from a company that specializes in logic games. While these games are approachable, and my 6 yo has even played one game of On-Words with us, they are not your standard "Chutes-n-Ladders" kinda games. So...just wanted to try to provide a context for them. We have several of the Wff'n Proof games and enjoy them. They're a standard part of our math/logic/language games on Fridays.

Classics enjoyed here - these would be more game night games...(the ones above I keep on my Rainy-Day-Friday-Play shelves in the school room. They're logic type games and we play them during school hours.)
I'm thinking these are all just a smidge old for all 3 girls right now...but adding them to the thread to consider for the future:
Up-Words - sort of like Scrabble...so maybe too much right now for the girls.
Boggle - would be a good fit.
Password - I have an old version of this game. It's a game of word association, so not really spelling/vocab...but it does work great for word associations and seems to fit...so throwing it in. Still not quite the target age range though.
I hadn't yet looked through the games at Rainbow Resources this year - I'm glad you linked. I had been considering Pairs in Pears, but had forgotten to look into it more so I'm really glad you and Jenn mentioned it!

Btw- if you have a small local toy or game store they usually let you play with the games before you buy. Some even have family game nights!!

Coming back to this thread to bump it and to say that Pairs in Pears is such a big hit here, and would make a GREAT Christmas present!
Emerging-readers can play, which makes it family friendly...and even the toddler can be given tiles and they can "play" without "disturbing" the game.
It can be FAST! You can sit down for a quick game in under 5 minutes.

That's good to hear. I was wondering about it. We recently got Babanagrams after the kids had played it with friends. It is a huge hit. We took it to California for Thanksgiving and everyone there is buying it for Christmas. Wondered if Pairs in Pears was as good.

I apparently didn't see this before.. but I just have to mention you might give scrabble another try. I learned to play with my grammy when I was under 8 (couldn't say for sure what age) What she did was have us lay the tiles face up in front of us so that she could help me. Good memories of playing scrabble with her throughout my childhood.

Not technically a game, but we treat it like a game and it has enhanced vocabulary here:
Marie's Words
It's a set of 550 cards, each containing a new word. What I love about this set is that one entire side of the card is really all about *visualizing* the word - either in action or in context. Since visualizing is such a huge part of our language arts (in dictation we *visualize* challenging words in our mind's eye to *see* them there and this helps us learn how to remember to spell them). So, this side of the card has a catchy, really fun picture of the word. An example: for the word "altercation" there is a picture of two cats fighting with the word highlighted below alter-CAT-ion...with the word FIGHT
How we use it:
I include it in our Morning Basket of work and use with all ages (4 - 16...but this set has the added benefit of helping prepare high schoolers for SAT vocabulary). I usually bring out one or two new words each week.
** Introduce the word along with the correct pronunciation
** Talk about the definition and meaning
** Read the word in context with the sentence provided
** Talk about the picture of the word in action/context on the other side.
** Challenge students to try to use the word in a written narration during the week
** Incorporate the new word in one of the dictation selections.
** Hang the card with the picture side facing out on our display board (where we hang our picture from picture study for the week).

This is what we do with Quiddler, which we love playing. With Bananagrams we help the young ones as we work on our own, and then the first person who finishes helps the younger ones too.

We've used the book Vocabulary Cartoons in this way.

Also one of my boys (who struggled with spelling) used to illustrate his spelling lists as a fun way to help him remember. (Spelling lists were based on words he misspelled in his own writing.)

Seconding Wff'N Proof games - awesome games!!! We are slowly building our supply of games to probably eventually own them all. FANTASTIC for logic development!
