I'm trying to bounce back from the blow of having to put dd1 in ps for another year. I'm sure some of you read my other post in the Living Learning section so I won't rehash that here. In the meantime I'm going to redouble my efforts in homeschooling by starting with my 3yo dd. I'm sure 3 seems young, but it's going to consist of mainly teaching her the alphabet using one letter per week. I was inspired in large part by Jessica at Shower of Roses. I found An Alphabet of Catholic Saints at a wonderful bookstore in Front Royal, VA last week while driving to my brother's house. I'm going to paint saint peg dolls for each letter like Jessica has done (and so many of you, also). I have sandpaper letters in manuscript (homemade) and cursive (purchased). I've gone through my children's book collection and written down books to read for each letter. Also I'm going to do an art project using fingerprint and handprint art to make an animal for each letter. When I taught preschool we did this in my room a lot and it was so cute! Right now I have ideas for every letter except n,u,v,x, and y. There are some I'm trying to think about how exactly to do them: iguana, koala, and rabbit, but I think I can work those out.

That's all I have for now but I think it's a pretty good start. Oh, I do want to find a good printout of each letter for her to color, but I think a google search will be all I need to do there. Any advice would be most appreciated!

That sounds like a fun way to enjoy working with your little one. Our daughter is also 3 and has just started kindergarten here, but she will be doing very relaxed things until she is coming up to 4.5 next year. So this year she will be drawing, doing things like paper weaving, making pompoms, using clay and wax, counting, sorting objects and pictures by simple groups (birds or animals, big or small etc), and doing cutting and sticking. She will join in on nature study but in her own little way - so not learning the "sciencey bit" but having fun doing bark rubbings, collecting things etc. This is best for my own particular child who is bright but isn't yet able to focus and concentrate and despite all her own self-belief is nowhere near ready to start pre-reading activities like learning letters of the alphabet, although I am letting her learn to write her name and she enjoys going over my letters so she is likely to learn naturally a certain amount I expect.

I LOVE how this works - each of us able to do what we want and what our own kids need! So much better than preschool programs - here in the UK even at 3 there is a curriculum and kids are supposed to be learning on set themes.

Your plans sound wonderful! I loved doing the alphabet in a similar way with my kids when they were little.
