What chores do you do monthly? I need to update my monthly chore list and would appreciate help to ensure that I'm not missing tasks.

Off the cuff...

Change air conditioner filter.
Check water softener salt.

I follow loosely follow the FlyLady system so there are things I do monthly the most people maybe once a year, but I do them when I am in that room's "zone."

Things like:
Clean ceiling fans
Clean glass globes in lights
Scrub baseboards
Wash walls
Wipe down washer and dryer

A few more ideas (some of these are monthly, some are a little more often than that):

Clean inside of dishwasher
Clean kitchen appliances
Wash knobs and switches throughout house
Organize pantry and storage closets
Straighten garage
Clean window sills
Wash toothbrush holders
Clean inside of fridge
Organize freezers
Go through coupons

OK, obviously I'm a cleaner, because all the items that Donna and Celeste listed -- I do weekly.

My monthly lists are different for each month, because I factor in weather conditions, daylight savings pegs, and major spring and fall cleaning.

Example......March

::plan and schedule summer vacation
::start spring yard cleanup. Edge beds.
::build trellises for vines
::check inside foundation for cracks or leaks
::DST - test smoke alarms, replace clock batteries, change clock times, spin mattresses, change fan blade direction
::check & wash windows, screens, screen doors
::wash curtains, shades, blinds
::check and change light bulbs
::wash light fixtures
::purge winter clothes
::declutter house and garage
::wash shower doors
::check caulk around tubs, toilets, sinks
::turtle wax showers and tubs
::wash cupboards inside and out
::clean all appliances inside, outside, behind, under
::defrost and clean all freezers
::clean oven exhaust filter
::check outside foundation for cracks
::check siding and trim for damage
::check roof for damage
::check and clean BBQ grill
::clean garage

This is a tip I got from a different thread on this board several months ago. It makes the sides of the tub and shower extremely easy to clean. You should put a thick towel on the floor of the shower or tub before you spray the wax on.

I should get Paula over here to help me out sometimes! Too bad I had not time for visitors or visiting when I did live in Minnesota!

Anyway, we do things around here more on a seasonal basis - liturgical seasons, but we consider the weather too. It's not "monthly" but a similar concept.

As for monthly, each week of the month we rotate to a different area (similar to FlyLady I think????) - and then we especially focus on the projects listed for that liturgical season.

So summer Ordinary time - is about airing things out; using things up (we try not to buy too much in the summer except for school items - so that we can capitalize in school sales now and sales on other items during the Christmas season); gardening; canning; drying spices/herbs; etc.

Fall ordinary time - same with the gardening stuff; but assuring that school things are being closed up for the year (we switch school years at Advent, and pretty much school year-round with ample breaks whenever needed).

Advent and Lent are both about purging - thinking of others and donating what we can; cleaning up other stuff as gifts and treats; recycling everything else we want OUT.

Etc.

Seriously, when I reunite a pair that has had a lonesome life I am gleeful! Kind of like the lost sheep, or maybe I need to get a life!

Monthly or weekly? Clean garbage cans, inside ones and outside.

Summertime seems to breed flies for us, so weekly or biweekly is more realistic in the hot months.

I do this weekly. I concentrate on different areas of the house Monday through Friday, so if there is a garbage can in the rooms we are cleaning, it is also cleaned. I also clean the recycling containers. They can get nasty.

Oh my gosh Paula, I must hang my head in shame now. My idea of cleaning...call the cleaning lady once a month! Things like the garbage can...uhhh...when it's realllly dirty?!

Ok, we're not exactly living in a pig-sty and it seems the more children I have the better I get!

However, I'm still waaay off from these maintenance type lists. It's usu. basic stuff on a day-to-day/weekly basis and the rest is on an "as-needed" or well a "this is waay PAST DUE thing that needs cleaned". Like air filter...when we all start sneezing.

Ok...that didn't answer the question and just made us sound like we're dirty but I promise we're really not. Soo, if you're ever in North Texas and want to visit, we'll show ya.

And don't forget the monthly heartworm meds!(or is that not a problem where you live? I know we no longer need them here in AK, but in NC and FL we sure did)Plus the monthly flea/tick treatment if you do that.

I would attempt to tie some of these things to other things.. like instead of washing ceiling lights once a month.. wash them when you replace a lightbulb.. you only have to climb up there the one time instead of to replace light bulbs AND to clean.. and cleaning them one at a time takes "no time".

Rather than cleaning shower doors.. keep a squeegee in the shower and scrape the water off each time instead of letting it build up.

Wash down the washer and dryer if needed any time you're waiting to add something.
