Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've searched in vain for a GOOD picture book based in the Philippines or some other Pacific Island area.

By "good" I mean of course a nice story but one that is conducive to an entire unit being built around it.

In looking at the world map of where we're "going" this year, that area is the only one lacking...

Ideas?

I'm blanking on what it's called... but my children really enjoyed a book about the navigation of Pacific islanders. If I recall, several brothers go on a journey to find a far-off island. It's supposed to tell the story of the first people to find the Hawaiian islands, I think. Sorry I can't remember more. Anyone else know which book I'm talking about?

Also, we recently read Punia and the Kind of the Sharks (by Lee Wardlaw) and my children really enjoyed it. It's about a clever Hawaiian boy that outsmarts the king of sharks to harvest all the lobster he can eat.

I have lots of suggestions for Hawaii books, but for some reason I thought you were looking for *other* Pacific islands so I didn't respond. before I type up a bunch of ideas, wanna let me know if you ARE interested in Hawaii or rather one of the other many, many Pacific islands out here?

and Kiera, thanks for the suggestions. I love navigation tales!

The Biggest Soap is a really sweet and entertaining book. I think it might meet your criteria. It is set on one of the Truk islands in Micronesia. In the interactions of the little boy with the villagers you learn about some of the aspects of the island culture. Sometimes is it in the dialogue but often it is in the background of the accompying illustrations.

Thank you all. I had in mind some of the non-Hawaiian islands... but will resort to that if needed!
