Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

or those with kids with asthma, which do you prefer?

Dd has some newly diagnosed mild asthma and is wheezing and we'd like to start some Albuterol on her tomorrow. Don't worry we have some sample things to get through tonight.
The pedi gave me these choices.
She is 7 and I think could do either. I am leaning towards nebulizer because I can use it if she ever gets really sick or if she happens to be uncooperative.
Our insurance is high deductible and won't pay for any of it as we haven't come even close to our deductible. I assume the Aero is cheaper. I feel the nebulizer will be more useful--even if only a little more expensive.
The ER is 45 minutes away and I like to be prepared out here.

I would definitely go with the nebulizer if I could only pick one.

We have both. The aero is fine when symptoms are mild, but when dd is sick the asthma can suddenly flare up in a truly ugly way (gasping for breath, can't breathe, dd panicking.... ). At those times the nebulizer (and the hot steamy bathroom) have saved us many a trip to the ER.

The aero is handy to carry with you in the car, etc, and it is a quick and easy treatment. The nebulizer is loud and takes 15-30 minutes. My dd started with the face mask aero, but now that she is almost 6, she is too big for that and last time the allergist gave us the mouth piece for the aero, which is tricky and she does not like it at all.

You might ask the dr to give you a prescription for Orapred as well, since you are so far from the ER. In a true crisis situation when air isn't moving,
you give the orapred (dissolves on the tongue) and get in the car. I hope you never have to do that.

Asthma... not my favorite thing

I'm with the neb as well.

Melinda and I seem to have the same thought.... beg for the Orapred and have it one hand. DH and I have been contemplating moving to the country and the long distance from an ER and all of my kids breathing issues is a big concern.

Good luck and remember humidity and asthma do not mix!!!! (I know that is horrible this time of year )

Thanks, good to hear I am thinking right.
I noticed in my searches there are portable ones with batteries (that sounds cool) and different brands. Suggestions?
I think I will just get a prescription for a nebulizer and I can choose--but I am not sure

Hey, don't give up on living in the country. It is beautiful and quiet and I have grown to love it. The doctors have been really good about giving me what I ask for once I let them know the ER is so far away. Dd's allergist wrote a script for Epipen's even before the testing had started. I'll mention the Orapred. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'd go with the nebulizer, too, if you're concerned about serious attacks.

If it's truly mild, maybe it can be controlled with something like what we have, which is a prescription "flexhaler" for pulmicort? VERY easy to use, we use ours daily, and my 6 yr old can do it just fine. Shake, twist, inhale. Replaced our nebulizer with it because we used to take our nebulizer in the car for issues with grass/dirt affecting her asthma, and our power plug in the car got burnt out by the nebulizer! Her symptoms are COMPLETELY managed now. But I don't know the insurance cost, or how it would compare.

Got it. We're good. Thanks for your help. Insurance nicely covered the nebulizer at 80% even though we haven't met our deductible. Probably a smart move on their part
