Does anyone else have this problem?
My ds loves Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, but I had to pull the plug on her when it was obvious he was picking up some of the bad behaviors (and attitudes) of the kids in the books (The "I thought you saids" come to mind).
Same thing with Ramona... I asked him why he was behaving in a particular way, and he said, "I"m just being difficult like Ramona"
I have all the Pippi Longstocking books and would like to read them those, only now I am a bit leery of what else he might pick up.
Right now he is back into the Little House books, which I have read and listened to so often that I do believe I could make hulled corn or run the thresher or load Pa's rifle myself

I know this syndrome all too well! We had to hide our DVD of Shirley Temple in Bright Eyes because of bad attitude being imitated. The child who was picking up too many ideas from a bad role model was 3 at the time, so we couldn't get too far in discussing things with her. But with a slightly older child, I think you might say, "That's a character in a book, not real life. Also, you are not Ramona. I'm so glad you're *you* and something I really like about you is (fill in the blank with a positive quality, an un-Ramona-ish trait)."
Peace,
Nancy

Yes I have had this happen!
Try the Tom Playfair books for lots of action with good character lessons. My boys LOVE these stories!

Nancy....this made me laugh so hard this morning!
My mother got me a couple Shirley Temple movies for my kids (or Shirley THE TEMPLE as my 5yo calls here) a few years ago. We equally had to put them aways as they were only imitating the bad girls behavior and started shooting everything with their machine gun!!!!!
FWIW, I also think that picking up "bad traits" from reading and movies diminishes as the child reaches the age of reason....when they can separate real form fantasy.

My oldest is the one that did this.. at about 2.5-3 yrs.. she tried out spitting and throwing shoes (from Mulan) and combing her hair with a fork a la Little Mermaid
For an older child I might consider something like a sickly sweet too good to be true Characters in a book.. and when the complaints came.. point out that if he wants to copy the characters you simply can not read him things like Ramona or Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.. so he'll have to get used to the goodie two shoes characters or change his behavior.
I'm thinking he'd get the point quickly

The big issue I have with Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is that there seems to be two separate lines of stories. The ones I remember from childhood, that I still like to read aloud, are the ones where she devises a consequence that, while rather outlandish, could conceivably happen and I think children can believe it - one I have always loved is the girl who wouldn't take a bath and the radish seeds that sprouted on her arms.
The other line of stories I don't remember reading before I had kids, and in these, Mrs. PW hands out bottles of magic potions to dose the kids with. I don't have a problem with magic per se in books, but I don't think kids learn any lesson from knowing the behavior was solved with drugs. Not that I treat Mrs. PW as a parenting manual but still...
I can't stand Pippi Longstocking so we have only read those occasionally. It seems like I do remember some things that could have easily been imitated by kids!

We read and enjoyed so much "The Children of Noisy Village" by the same author... hmm, maybe we'll just reread that.
I have Tom Playfair on my wishlists at all the book swap sites. Maybe I will try to get it through ILL. Thanks for reminding me, Michele!

Melinda, I just had a conversation with another mom about "Calvin and Hobbes". Her son said my son looks just like him. I was joking that he can BE just like Calvin.
My brother has my old books, and told me he can give them back at any time.
I told I have to wait because my son doesn't need any ideas. Then she told me she had to keep the books away for the same reason for another son!
