From this thread, I'm going to ask a more general question.
What do you use for figures for your timeline or Book of Centuries? Actually, the first question is DO you use figures for your BOC?
And I'd love to hear what you use. Make your own?

It truly depends on the kids. Sometimes they make their own. Other times we will find an internet image or we use the CDs from Homeschool in the Woods. There are also times when we don't use any figures

I've used sets from Homeschool in the Woods, a set from Winter Promise this past year (colorful but too cartoony for my taste) and we've done our own for things that weren't in the sets, like saints, composers, etc. I just find an image online and print it (could print on sticker paper even for instant glue).
however, I wanted to mention that Emmanuel catalog has new sets this year on the back of their catalog, which include Catholic figures! So I'm going to try those this year.

We're a little like Paula. Sometimes we enjoy using images we can print, and other times the kids enjoy illustrating on their own. And...still other times, it's just a significant name/event and a date.
This could be a personal thing, but I don't want the kids to rely solely on preprinted images for their BOC, so I vary the choices for them at times. I suppose I do this because I cherish the illustration my kids have done on their own - Davy Crockett's gun - Old Betsy, the Mississippi River drawn under DeSoto (discoverer of the Miss.), etc. Having said that, I do use some historical images I can print.
I use Homeschool in the Woods History Through the Ages timeline figures. They are good quality b/w images. There is a choice to print the figure with a small descriptive blurb, or not. The placement guide is a huge help for me. I can see which figures are available to print around the period we are studying and I print only what we need. There are several Catholic figures from history represented on this CD.
These printable figures are totally not necessary, and for just starting a BOC you could just write names, dates, and encourage illustrations when the child wants to do that. I'm careful not to require a picture for every entry in the BOC. That would discourage some children who would begin to feel like they have to crank out some creative *something* for everything they come across. However, some children really enjoy this. I invite or ask if they would like to do a picture, but don't require it.
Other sources for historical images:
If you subscribe to historical magazines you can cut and clip. Some Nat'l Geographics are good for this. I can get old copies for a dime at my friends-of-the-library bookstore. Sometimes these make great sources for cutout images. Currclick is another option you might want to stomp around. I was there the other day and saw some things you could print for your BOC. Usually they have affordable things. I'm picky about images though...I don't like cartoony images.

Jenn, I am not sure where to answer this, but we love timelines in this house. I felt like my life became ever so much clearer when I purchased my first timeline and could see not only when events occurred historically but also where writers, artists, musicians and science was occurring at the same time.
So we have a hugh wall that spans creation through the present day. We started with the Catholic World History and Timeline Guide. I also purchased Homeschool in the Woods History through the Ages. I really liked it and it followed along well with our studies; however, I seem to have...ahem...misplaced it.
We have also used items that we have found online as well. Currently, we are doing the Tour de France, so I think we will place a few of the figures on the timeline.
And of course, being a hugh fan of Emmanuel Books, I may have to look into those as well. They look wonderful and I like the description below the image.

This is pretty much us, too.
I don't tell ds what to put in his timeline book. That is purely his choice.
Most of the time ds uses Google images to find a picture he likes. And it isn't always pics of people he wants to add. It may be a building or an artifact, etc. Sometimes he photocopies images out of our history book, and sometimes he draws his own. My only expectation is that if there is an image, there must be a caption--written by him.
I actually like this approach because of the variety it lends to the book. The timeline figures all look sort of alike, which is great if you want a nice, neat consistent look to your timeline/book, but I prefer the more eclectic look of make-your-own. I find it great fun to page through later and see all of the variety of stuff he's got in there.

We've used the First Timeline figures, artwork found on the web, figures from an out-of-print textbook, Saint cards, RChistory figures, maps...
We've also added photos of various crafts and activities (a necklace made in Egyptian style, food, child wearing historical costume, sling)
My oldest loved the photo option in particular
She's able to make something relevant and then enjoy spending the time considering how to arrange it to best effect and take a photo (she's moderately serious about her photography). And that way she would have something to keep even when making something consumable (humus mmmmm_)

Oh, thank you for all your input! I just love the ideas. I've been thinking I didn't want to be boxed into uniform figures.
