Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Have any of you given your home a name? You know, like Green Gables...or like boats ?

Honestly, my family doesn't seem all into it. Left to the men, our home may end up being called Fenway . So, I thought it would be more fun and productive to brainstorm with lady friends...

here are some words that come to mind to describe our home:

of Mary - Marian
cottage
desert

here are some words I like although they may be a stretch:

elegant
oasis
haven

words that describe us:

Catholic
learning
baseball
food
hospitality
Irish heritage
humor

I sure will appreciate any help!

Love,

it needs to be shorter.. I mean

Irish Cottage Oasis in the Desert

Might be pretty but you won't get that all spit out so it'll either get abbreviated (ICOD? ) or dropped.

Green Gables describes a particular feature.

Is there a particular feature that stands out that you could use?

Exactly. And for as much as I like acronyms, not for my home .

Poor thing, no. Really, I think this is, in part, why she needs a pretty name. In six years we have made her prettier, but truly, she is just a little home next to a bunch of other little homes just like her, architecturally (did I just spell that?) speaking.

Love,

"Our Little Home" Now remove images of Little House on the Prairie type books..

can't you just see a pretty little sign saying

"welcome to our little home"

It's not pretty or fancy.. but it's what you just called her.. and is a rather sweet name.

This is what I thought of when you called your house a "little home"

That is rather sweet, Jodie! Let me ponder that!

If you have time to waste, I just found a Boat Name Machine

Heavenly Harbor might work!

Maybe an alliteration with Mara (Irish/Sea)...

More words:

Sun - Sunny...

Love,

I'd love to name our home, but it's so cookie cutter. Maybe I'll have to get on that.

ETA: Heavenly Harbor sounds great!

Our house, too. Aside from a different landscape, or maybe window boxes to add a "country charm," we can't afford any structural changes to give us any distinction. There are some days, I'm afraid, our neighbors would think it more resembles the "Delta House." I'm motivated and working toward somehow infusing our home with a little more of "me/us."

Yes! Although our cookie cutter homes can be sweet, too . One thing that is a bit different about our house is that we painted her white. (When our neighbors chose to paint their homes, they all went with darker colors.) I love little white homes! We had our front yard planted with 2 trees, one vine, and several blooming bushes. The white is a pretty background for the colorful plants.

Off to the Cottage Name Generator...

Love,

We're Windy Maples...because we're on top of a hill and it's very windy up here...and we love our maples.

I like 2 words that seem to go together. It seems easier to say.

Hmmmm....thinking of you and some descriptors you've given so far, Angie...how about...

Irish Sun **my fav**
Baseball cottage
Blue haven (for your blue door...from your favorite color poll thread)
Irish blues
Baseball blue

Does your home have any other characteristics...a favorite tree? lots of sand? mountains in the background? a landscape feature you like? how about typical weather?

How fun!

My thought, now that you've said a distinguishing factor is the white cottage, but you mentioned devotion to our lady, was in the Litany of Loreto when she is call "tower of ivory."

I found this quote under "ivory tower" on Wikipedia:
Quote:
In Judeo/Christian tradition, the term Ivory Tower is a symbol for noble purity. It originates with the Song of Solomon (7,4) ("Your neck is like an ivory tower"; in the Hebrew Masoretic text, it is found in 7:5) and was included in the epithets for Mary in the sixteenth century Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary ("tower of ivory", in Latin Turris eburnea), though the title and image was in use long before that, since the 12th century Marian revival at least.[1] It occasionally appears in art, especially in depictions of Mary in the hortus conclusus.

I know the turn of the phrase, "ivory tower," can have a more pejorative meaning, but if you called it Ivory Cottage, you could claim it as both devotion to our lady and a descriptor of your favorite feature.

Also, what kinds of trees are in your yard? The estate where my husband works was called "Scarlet Oaks" when it was a residence, and another local mansion I can think of is called "Ivy Hall."

In one of the recent Miss Marples, the estate is called simply "Chimneys." She remarks how it seems a strange name for such a grand estate, but when you are there and see all the chimneys it makes sense. So, the name could just be a noun and need not be flowery.

Ivory Cottage sounds lovely.
Why not pick your favourite Marian title or apparation site and try to work that in?
I think the house will take on whatever name you choose as it's more about your family than the actual structure.

Here's how we named ours.

We're in Australia, and our house was built in the federation style. ie. after 1901 when the states of Aust. federated and we became a nation independent of Britain with a federal govt. So I wanted a name that reflected the era. I'm also a HUGE Jane Austin fan! As our house is more of a cottage I thought about "Barton Cottage" as in Sense and Sensibility. This became a perfect fit in two ways. Australias first Prime Minister was Edmund Barton! So I killed two birds with the one stone.

What about a Galic name?
One lady here, Leanne Maree, had a galic phrase at the front of their home. Can't remember what it was.

The first thing that came to mind was Mary's little desert cottage. But I'm not that good at naming.

Well...this probably won't be any help to you at all, but we jokingly refer to our current house---which is literally a tiny little old shack by the water--as "The Love Shack."
Any B52 fans out there?

YES!!!

There are some great name ideas for you here, Angie! I like "Shelter from the Storm"!! That's catchy...and easy to say! Isn't it funny how I can vote on a name of someone's house that is across the country, that I've never seen, and for someone I've never met! Postively brazen of me!

Angie,

We are from australia and as 'Tricia' said in an earlier post,......My dh is Irish and as we always want our children to remember their fathers heritage we named our home Its always a talking point.
CÉAD MÍLE FÁILTE. meaning- 100 1000 welcomes.

We recemtly moved And I prayed a novena to St Joseph. So our home is dedicated to St Joseph. We called our home move a 'God move'.

That could be a way of achieving your house name.
Leanne

I just read that book! It is a rare A. Christie that I never read.

I really like the Ivory Cottage idea. In taking another look at our home, we are surrounded by four towering oaks. And we live on a street called Ladywood. We'll be planting roses this weekend. Maybe by next year I can come up with something like "Our Lady of the Oaks and Roses." Kind of long though.

Do you have any plantings that are unique to your home or that you love? Maybe watch "The Quiet Man" for some Irish inspiration?    That blue door could be used as backdrop for a Marian reference.

God Bless,
