I just finalized my nature study plans for JBug (grade 3) next year. I have them up on my blog here:Nature Study plans if anyone cares to take a look.
I'd love to hear what the rest of you have planned (or are considering) for nature study next year.
(btw, we do nature study as a separate subject from general science. I'll be sharing my plans for science in a separate post.)

We do nature study as general subject too, apart from science. Thanks for sharing. Haven't read it yet but hope to get a chance soon. Not sure what we are doing yet.

This is great Theresa! I love the selection of books! I have never read any of the Buckly books but I'm certainly going to check them out.
As I've been planning for the coming year I had actually decided to leave the nature study plans out  . I just feel like it is going to be such a different year I didn't even know how to plan in the nature. Trouble is, nature study is so good for us as a family! When my kids are at the height of their bickering and life is falling apart a good long nature hike is the best medicine.
I think you've given me the answer though. I've always planned our nature study by the animal or plant type or whatever. We talk about it then go and do our hike hoping to see an example of what we're studying. We enjoy the time outdoors whether we see what we're looking for or not. With this pregnancy and then a new baby though, I wasn't sure how much hiking we'd actually be able to do this year.
But I like the way you have done it. I like the idea of planning the book, then, even if we dont' get to the hike, we've still studied a bit about nature.I think that could work, even when I'm resting with this new baby. We are also blessed to live in a house that has a great view of the woods (the back of our house is in the woods) and a river on the East side, and an old farm field that is no longer worked on the north side. There is wild life in abundance just looking out our windows. So even if we don't get to the hike, we can still study about and enjoy nature.
Sorry about this rambling post. I am so inspired I'm sort of thinking and planning as I type!

Becky, we have always done things a lot like you. Usually I plan our readings based on what I think we might see on our outings. Sometimes that gets difficult, because, well, you never know, right? So I would often second-guess my reading choices, fret over it, fret some more, and then just not read anything at all. Then we just go out and wing it.
This year I am just going ahead and planning the reading, and if we see these things on our outings, great. If not,still great. We can always come back and learn more about what we do see. We've always done that anyway.
The reason for the change is simplicity--I'm trying hard next year to not to make things more difficult than they have to be.

 I hear ya Theresa. That's exactly what I'm hoping to accomplish as well. Your nature study plan, with the books all chosen out, ensures the study without the frustration of finding a book that fits what they want to study, when they want to study it.
And, because these seem to be excellent books, they will be interesting and inspirational.
Okay, I'm off to plan some nature reading for our homeschool for the coming year!

Jenny is nearly 9. I would think they would be appropriate as a read-aloud for approx 6-12 or so.You can click on the Baldwin project link in my post and read the text to get a feel for the writing style/level.
