Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was reading another post about CM's accomplishments for 6 year olds. She wants a lot of things memorized.

My question is, how do you help young children (like ages 3-5) memorize things? Do you just read it line by line and have them repeat?? I know when I used to have to memorize something for school I would read it over and over and copy it by hand a few times. But this method doesn't really work for ones who don't read or write yet.... Any ideas would be appreciated!

Hi Vanessa!

Memorization comes so easy for the younger set. Here's how I do it.

We keep lessons short. I say a selection once and have my child repeat it once. We might say and repeat one more time, and that's it for the day. Next lesson the next day.

Let's take a poem as an example. We only work on one stanza at a time. We just keep adding to it a little at a time.

Me: Ok, Peanut (5yo), let's work on our poem. "Trees By Joyce Kilmer. I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. Now you try."
Peanut: Trees by Joyce Kilmer. I think that I shall never.... (forgets)
Me: see a poem lovely as a tree.
Peanut: I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree.
Me: That's great! Do you want to try it one more time?
Peanut: Trees by Joyce Kilmer. I think that I shall never see a poem...
Me: lovely as a tree. Hey! That was great for today.

And we're done! Sure hope this helps!

If I want DD to memorize something, all I have to do is set it to music and after hearing it a few times she's got it. It makes it so much easier!

Sometimes I also post a poem right in front of the kitchen sink and say it at a given time.....at breakfast or lunch, etc.
