I found this really cute book at the library called "The Alphabet Tree" By Leo Lionni.
It is a book for preschool age children but I think the concept could be used for slightly older children as well. As you read thru the book it goes from the letters to words to how to make sentences and at the   end a caterpiller says the words need to make sense and have meaning.
