Hi Gals , I am just wrapping up a few of our schooly things before going offline on the 17th
I am wanting to find a good , non boring main core World history book for ds14 . Again I need something not to juvenile yet not to over his head .
I'm using A Child's History of the World for ds9 but ds14 needs something a bit more plus anything with the word child in the tile offends him
So I am wondering about Story of the Wodl but have never seen it or heard from actual people who have used it and not sure which vol. I would start him on . So I would love some feedback on that series .Could it be used for both boys and I dump CHOW ?
Ok the other idea I have is to use The series put out by Yesterday's Classics
On the shores of The Great Sea by M.B Synge it is vol. 1 in the series .
I'm not purchasing til august end so lots of time for choice . Looking forward to Your ideas .
Rox

I think Van Loon's The Story of Mankind would be great for this and it would combine very well with CHOW. Story of the World is too simple for a 14 yo I think.

Well,I just got my hands on it recently after hearing about it for so long, and I have not read the whole thing yet, but so far it seems to be a slightly more mature version of Child's History of the World. Very readable and story-like. I cannot vouch for the accuracy as I am not a history buff, and I am sure you'd have to look out for bias as far as reformation/church history, etc, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the chapters I have read so far.

Leanne,
You can access the book online and judge for yourself whether it's suitable for your family or not:
The Story of Mankind
There is at least one edition for sale, updated by John Merriman, which brings the reader from The Great War (essentially where van Loon left off) up to the 1990s. In all, the updated version has 13 additional chapters.

Story of Mankind is a bit of a blast! He definitely has his opinions- which my children found refreshing (not just a politically correct opinion!).
A Little History of the World is also very readable Roxie, and quite like a story as well. It is written by Gombrich, who also wrote The Story of Art. It wouldn't be too light for a 14yo, especially if you fleshed out the spine with some good books.
