Anybody out there discovered their mouse trails yet??
We are pretty much in full melt from winter here in Idaho, and one of the beautiful things about melting snow is that it uncovers what's been hidden all winter long. Our acreage, and specifically our newly planted grass (last fall) is a maze and wonder-world of mouse trails!! Needless to say our cats are thrilled.
Last year we found dozens of nests uncovered when the field of alfalfa was finally melted and we're not quite there yet, but I'll keep you posted. What we found interesting about the nests last year is that they are pristine inside, not a dropping to be found, only occaisionally some mouse hairs. They were all abandoned as well.
Would love to hear of anyone else's discoveries mouse trails or other!

Meredith, I have to laugh because when I saw this topic, I automatically thought you were talking about something like Elizabeth's "rabbit trails" only on a smaller scale. I thought "mouse trails" were going to be mini-projects or perhaps research done using a computer mouse.
Boy, do I need to get back to nature!
BTW, your mouse trails sound incredibly interesting. Now would be a good time to read Jill Barklem's Winter Story to your children!

Alice, now I'm laughing! I can't wait for MacBeth to respond to this one . If only I were that clever...We love all the Jill Barklem's books, my daughter has read them over and over, and we especially enjoy the Winter Story.
Have you all thawed out on the East Coast?? Would love to hear what spring brings for you all in the way of nature discoveries.
Take care.

Thaw???HA!
On Tuesday, in an ice/snow storm, it took me 2.75 hours to travel a 7 mile circle, and I drive an SUV. and then the electricity went out just as I was serving dinner. Even my daffodils are cringing under the snow, and more is predicted for Friday/Saturday. The lawn is a snow-covered mud slide, the trees are quite bare, and the wind over the past two days has been gale force. Even the dog won't go out. We have had time to get more of our kitchen floor uncovered ("Final layer? Yes, Regis, final layer!"). Under all that vinyl, underflooring, rubber, and matting, is a lovely, unfinished pine floor. Now all I have to do is finish getting all the floor up, sand it and paint it (thank you Debbie Travis!). But I really digress...
The nice naturey thing is that there are a few mouse trails outside in the snow, along with the usual mixed flock of bird feet, squirrel feet, and kid feet. We have robins, but they don't migrate too far, so they are sometimes here all winter. I have no idea what they are eating.
I finally hung out suet to keep everyone satisfied over times when the bird feeder is empty, and it is too cold to go out and fill it!
Say, I like the idea of mini-units called "Mouse Trails." Maybe I should rename the newsletter...or maybe add a separate part with "mouse trails" of ideas that people have gotten from the newsletter.

Too funny MacBeth, I promise I won't expound on our lovely sunny weather. We've been known to get many inches of snow well into June, so I'm not holding my breath, but for now, it's heavenly.
I'll be happy to contribute to the "Mouse Trails" section, maybe even co-author with you. We just witness our red-tailed hawks devouring a mouse. It seems one of the juveniles from last year is still tagging along with his mother. He tried to steal her snack, quite mouse-trail-ish!
Stay toasty, and I'll be praying for your flooring project to go well.

OK, how about this..."Mouse Trails" will be readers' ideas and observations...in "Blog" format. I'll set up a Blog where Wild Monthly readers can add ideas. Meredith, would you be interested in helping with that?

MacBeth, that sounds great, and I'd be happy to help however I can, although I'm probably not qualified. I'm sure I can add antics and humor where necessary, or maybe help with dialogue between readers and whatnot. I'm sure we will have no end to our own mouse-trails just from visiting in our backyard, but I'm still a little new at the whole *blogging* concept.
Let me know what you're thinking and sign me up

Tripod says you have to become a Tripod member to become a regular contributor. Now all I have to do is figure out how one becomes a Tripod member...it has been a long time since I joined. I'll get back to you.

I am not too sure about this, but I think you have to go to Tripod/Lycos and set up an account.
Tripod/Lycos Account.
If there is a problem, let me know. If it works, I'll add your e-mail to the posters list.
We are beginning to thaw (more snow over the weekend, maybe?). It is still well below freezing at night, but the days are in the 40s. Our lawn faces south, so the snow has melted, but on the other side of the street there is still significant snow piled up. I am looking forward to a nice warm spring...!

Meredith, I clicked on "comments" yesterday and got nothing. Today I get a new window with space for comments. When you get a chance, try again and let me know what happens.

OK, I posted a test comment and it says moderator will check and then post, so that's you! Let me know if it was successful or not. Incidentally I didn't have to join to post so far???
It looks like snow here today, I'm praying that is does not

OK. Comments work. Now I'll see if I can add you so you can just post an "entry" rather than a comment.
