We recently celebrated a Confirmation in the Extraordinary Form in our parish. It was lovely, but because our priest said he would likely only being doing it every other year in that form, lots of families in our parish (who also happen to be in our close circle of friends) had their children confirmed, and several were two to a family.
I've looked over the past threads for confirmation gift ideas, and I keep seeing Weigel's Letters to Young Catholics recommended.
A) Is it appropriate for younger teens like 12/13?
B) Would it be weird to give a copy to each child in the same family or should I come up with another book for the second one?
Any other thoughts on ideas for this would be appreciated. It is difficult and mind boggling to shop for so many at once, yk? Whereas I might be more creative with one or two patron saints in mind, seven different teenagers to buy for is a bit overwhelming, not to mention the 3 First Communicants. I'm already "late" yk, and if I could order the gift from Amazon Prime, it would be ideal so I could give the gifts on Sunday after mass.
And also, frankly, it is harder to be as generous as I might like with so many to buy for at once. For just one or two, I'd probably buy a book and give a check for $15 or so. At this point, I could give EITHER a book or a check for $15 tops.
I was thinking of giving the book ($10) and a little bag with 5 gold dollar coins and a little note about the parable of the talents which would be a way of gifting that extra $5 without feeling quite so "cheap" as a five dollar bill. Is that too cheesy?
Side note: We thought that the First Communicants would definitely enjoy getting their money in gold coin form (it was a huge hit with godchildren at Christmas), but the only gold coin connection I can think of is St. Nicholas. Any other ideas?

No, it's not cheap or cheesy. I like your idea. I buy a little gift for each of our parish first communicants each year and my budget for each is $1.50! So I make good use of the Autom catalog.  And I think simplifying it to give everyone the same thing is SMART. (I actually do that for Christmas some years.)
Gold coin idea: What about St. Jude? He is always pictured with that giant gold image of Jesus that looks like a coin. The idea is that he is an apostle, bringing Jesus to others....something that maybe first communicants are now more able to do since they have just received Him in the Eucharist themselves. Maybe include an inexpensive paper holy card of St. Jude?
Otherwise, St. Nicholas is still the patron saint of children all year long...not just in December!

as far as giving the same book to two children in the same family.. go for it... my kids love getting "their own" copy of books.

Bridget, can you think of a comparable book that would be appropriate for the younger teen? I was going to get St. Patrick's Summer for the First Communicants, but it was a little late in coming. Would it be too young for a 12/13 year old First Communicant? It feels a smidge old.
Sigh. That really is such a tricky age, isn't it?

Oh ugh...I was thinking of the wrong book. They have similar spines and I got them confused in my head. I was thinking of...and meant to recommend...

What's that Peter Kreeft book that Elizabeth Foss has recommended....Catholic Christianity I think?
A prayer book I really like is the Glenstal Book of Prayer. LTP has it for less than $9 but if you have Amazon Prime, I'm not sure the difference in shipping would make it worth it.

My eleven going on twelve dd was just confirmed (our diocese has the regular confirmation age set at grade six).
She received her own adult bible http://www.amazon.com/Ignatius-Catholic-Revised-Standard-Duv elleĀ/dp/1586171003 as per family tradition and a copy of this prayer book http://www.amazon.com/Daily-Meditations-Holy-Spirit-Winker/d p/089942189X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274994031&sr=1- 1 but her favorite gift was a simple wooden cross pendant with flames engraved on it.

What about My Daily Bread? I think it's a good book for that age-group to start learning about meditation!

Thank you ladies SO MUCH. I ended up ordering the Philadelphia Catholic book for the younger boys/siblings and from another thread, JennGM had recommended an OOP book, Imelda...?, anyway, as fate would have it, there was a used option with Amazon Prime, so, I was able to get it in time for the little girl First Communicant. Dh is getting the gold coins to supplement, and I just need to figure out a simple appropriate packaging! Thanks so much!
