Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just received an email from a homeschooling friend:

"the County Supervisors are meeting on June 15th to either approve or turn down the preliminary budget for 2010-2011. The library is NOT in the budget, this means that if they approve the preliminary budget our libraries would close by June 30th."

I called our local librarian to confirm.....it is true.

Please pray for a library miracle for us?

Our homeschooling absolutely depends on the library......we are literature-based educating here. I might have to move......

Praying for all of your intentions!

Sadly yours,

Praying! We depend on our libraries for so much also!
St. Jerome (patron of librarians), pray for us.

Chari ... hate to do this to you, but sounds like our prayers and your actions will help a lot! You have 2-3 weeks to rally a group of county leaders to fight this ... or fund-raise to cover costs ... or band together and take over ...

Seriously, I couldn't live without the public library -- even if what I do is borrow a book to see if I want to buy it. But you homeschoolers really need to fight this ... maybe show how since y'all don't go to public school, the funding/child for public school "saved" by the county could go into the library budget ...

Prayers and hugs heading your way ...

This is your entire county?      I will pray for you!!! I know of one city here in MI which is planning their own library's closure in the next year, but an entire county?! That's appalling!!!

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

Oh, wow.

Praying.

We are incredibly dependent on our library as well.

Chari,
I was thinking about you and your library situation all morning, as this is our library day. I even talked to one of our librarians about it!

Here are some ideas for contacts to rouse up to try to get this reversed:
your local CA house member
your CA US representative
your US senators
every homeschool group in your county
any Child Literacy program you can think of
MOPS groups and any preschool programs (get those moms of preschoolers!)
every school district (those kids have to go somewhere to do research and reading!)
stretching here, but our former First Lady (who has her degree in library science, I believe)

I know CA is in dire straits, financially. We, here in MI, definitely can relate and feel that pain of the dollar that just can't be stretched far enough.

Now, who is the patron saint of reading/books/possibly libraries?

God Bless,
Stacy in MI (a serious bibliophile, in case there was any question! )

That's crazy! I'm definitely praying!

St. Jerome is the patron saint of librarians. Maybe we could ask his intercession.
