Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just came across this author and don't know his work . Is it any good ? one of his books titled The Island is listed in use with intermediate science through literature . I then saw he has written many other books . I'm thinking ds14 may enjoy some of these others .
what have you thought of this author ? Thanks , Rox

Gary Paulson is great. His best work, I think, are the Brian books--Hatchet (which is a classic, IMHO), River, Brian's Winter, etc. My son loved them when he was about 10-12, so they may be a bit juvenile for your 14 yo. I think most of his books are aimed at that younger age group, but I'm not sure.

Thanks Theresa , it is hard to say with him because he is not a big nor advanced reader but also do not want him to feel a story is for younger children .
I think maybe my best bet is to start with The Island & do it as a readaloud and see where we go from there Thanks a bunch , Rox

I remember really liking Hatchet as a kid, but there was another one... Dogsong? where the main character comes across a young pregnant woman, and after she has the baby, he kills it at her request by leaving it out in the snow. I found it very disturbing - still do.

To be honest I didn't get that far, I found Dogsong rather boring. But the Hatchet books were good.

I remember my 5th grade teacher doing Hatchet as a read-aloud. It might be too intense for younger children, though...

We read Hatchet a few months. My kids, especially my ds, loved it. We have Brian's Return but we haven't read it yet.
