I'm not exactly asking if you like the name, but how strange you think it is Not that strange has to equal bad, but I'd like to know what reactions people might have to the name.
What do you think of Thaddeus? In your mind, is it Aloysius/Augustine-level unusual for a modern baby, or more on the order of Theodore or Vincent?
I like the St. Jude connection, I like that it's in keeping with one of the more influential ethnicities in our heritage but somehow doesn't seem to sound any stranger with our monosyllabic Anglo-Saxon surname than with a name of that ethnicity, and I like that maybe Teddy could be a nickname, but I'm curious how people react to it, because I'm not anything like set on the name. (Have discussed this possibility briefly with my husband, but he's definitely the less opinionated one about names.)
Oh, and do you think Teddy really can be a nickname for Thaddeus? I don't think I like Tad or Thad, no offense to anyone to whom those names mean something! I just know that the actor Ted Knight's real name was Tadeusz (but he also changed his surname) and I figured the Ted was based on his real name. And I just remembered another Ted I once knew of whose real name was Thaddeus or Tadeusz. But I wonder if it might somehow be difficult to get people calling him that.
Funny thing is I'd considered Theodore and my husband surprisingly mentioned it too, but said something about how the boys would zero in on the Chipmunks connection (they don't have to have actually *seen* any Chipmunks production to talk about them... sigh) I know it means "gift of God" and it is a saint's name. It's just hard not to think of it as an older man's name or chubby cartoon chipmunk's name, but maybe I should consider it too. Just feeling so uninspired looking for a third boy's name!

More in the order of Theodore, but then I'm not the best one to ask, my children have unusual names such as Xavier and Ignatius

I actually sense Xavier is a bit closer to mainstream than it was, oh, 15 years ago (at least in the US.) Ignatius I agree is a very distinctive name still! I'm not necessarily ruling a name out for being "strange," just want an idea of reactions/perceptions we and later he might get.

Well we know a Thad.
I would put it on the order of an out of use but not weird name.
And if Teddy can be a nickname for Theodore.. why not for Thaddeus.

i think thaddeus is a great name and teddy would be a fine nickname. you could also use his initials for a nickname. i can see tad being changed to tadpole.
i see it on the same level as theodore and vincent.
God bless and congratulations!

I definitely prefer Thaddeus to Theodore (sorry, T.R.!). Those Chipmunks have ruined a couple of decent names.
I did know a Thad in kindergarten...He liked to kiss all the girls, LOL!
I think you can give your child whatever nickname you prefer and make it stick. We've certainly seen that happen in my extended family.
I always like to think of my childrens' names on business cards - how would that name look on that dignified cardstock rectangle? Thaddeus and Ted both sound masculine and adult.

I like the name. Not common, but not weird. I do tend to think of Tad as the nickname for it, though. But I really like the nickname Tad.

I really like the name Thaddeus. It is not common but I don't think weird. I have a 34 year old cousin who is Thaddeus Jude. He has mostly been TJ to us.

I love the name Thaddeus! But I'm with Erin, my names are way traditional and way Catholic. With the rampant exploration of classic names you could totally get away with it.
I'm not a nickname sort of person so Teddy wouldn't fly with me for whichever full name.
Oh and I had a student Thaddeus many moons ago and they also called him Thad.
Good luck, names are the bane of my existence when I am pregnant, especially for boys.

Names take such, such consideration, no? It seems that the moment we even sense our little ones within the womb we begin the search for *the name*! And although we take such consideration with names, ultimately, you choose a name that speaks to your heart. Trying not to think too much about the opinions of others, though of course, you want to weed out any unnecessary hysterics, or perhaps fits-of-laughter from others
...now all that said, I have three girls, and with each impending birthing time my dear husband has come up with the same boy's name with the hopes that someday he'll have the opportunity to use it. Axel. Yes, Axel. You read correctly. Certainly, I mean to offense to those who love the name Axel. But I, ...well...don't. And it will be a cold day in H-E-Double Hockey Sticks, before I name my child Axel. Of course, my loving husband did his research before presenting the name, and to my absolute surprise, he DOES have a Great-Uncle (who was Scandanavian) named Acsel. Now that's a bit different. Perhaps one day I *could* live with the name Acsel (spelling makes all the difference, no?).
...But still, to my own defense, most people are going to think that we've named our little boy after Axel Rose from Guns-N-Roses.
My gosh, names are important, aren't they? ...follow your heart!

I think Thaddeus is in the Theodore/Vincent category. I know a Thad.
And after watching The Letter Factory movies a zillion times, my boys would LOVE to have a little brother they could call Tad.
Chris, you just keep having those girls!!!

I don't think Thaddeus is too odd. Of course, I have a probably-never-to-be-used name that's outside the mainstream also: Ephrem. I think my parents would faint!

My thoughts exactly! Maybe he'd settle for Alexander, with Axel as a nickname? Especially if you present it as giving the child more options when he is older?

Oh but think it could make such a nice middle name but it would look nice as something like A. Michael on a business card..

I think Thaddeus/Thad/Tad is a very strong masculine name. Unusual, but not weird in the least. Go for it.
Peace,
Nancy

My cousin is Thaddeus Jude, and always went by "TJ", now as an adult he is Thaddeus and it sounds great!
I like Tad for a nickname rather than Thad though.
I think Axel is cool.
I also like Blaise.
It appears we are having a boy, due near St. Vincent's feast day, I'm hoping to slip in Vincent as the middle name- Isaac Vincent.
For girls it was going to be Stella Maris or Gemma Catherine.

"See Chris, I told you, it's such a cool name!"
...you never know when and if I may be eating my own words...he can be very persuasive

Lisa, Isaac Vincent is a great name!!
What are your thoughts on Ingrid for a girl? (St. Ingrid of Sweden)

Ingrid calls to mind Brigid and I like both of those!!
for Swedish I've always kind of like Annika, too, and Lars, which I think is a Lawrence derivative and we are big St Lawrence fans around here.
hmmm maybe Isaac Lawrence is in the running?!
